USB to Serial Port Adapter/ Windows XP Service Pack 3

    Question

  • I had been using a Prolific USB to Serial Port adapter to access a serial port device (a Campbell Scientific data storage peripheral). The set-up worked fine while my operating system was Windows XP Service Pack 2. However, since my machine has been upgraded to Service Pack 3, I am not able to connect to the device. I receive the error message that “Standard prompt not received’.  To confirm that the trouble is not with any of the hardware components, I used the adapter to connect to the serial port device on a computer with XP Service Pack 2 and all worked well.

    Can you provide a fix?

  • Hello JP,

Please try to un-install and re-install the software, find the setupapi.log and read it, find the string "PID_2303" (if it is a Prolific 2303 device), also search for the error "Standard prompt not received"

Let us know what you find.

  • Hi solo_software --

I did remove and re-install the driver and have copied the section of the setupapi.log relative to its re-installation. I searched for 'Standard prompt not detected" but found nothing.

  • Hi JPMorgan,

Any chance you can install the same driver on two machines, one SP2 and the other SP3, and share a diff of the logs?  It might help give us a clue as to what's critically different.

  • Hello JP,

The installation looks OK as no errors are reported. Please check printers and Faxes and verify that no printer or other device is pointing to the COM port.

Re-install the OPOS drivers or the software you are using to access the device.
