Mk, so i have MS windows vista home premium edition and i have Windows live onecare. Ive noticed that only when i have Windows live Oncecare installed it turns off windows defender only on startup, so all i have to do is turn it back on... But now for some reason I am getting this error message 'windows defender error :0x800710dd' and it turns off windows defender. Is this going to be a problem for me if i already have an anti-virus/anti-spyware program? If it MIGHT be a problem, how can i get rid of this problem? Thanks in advance if any1 can help me.

well i think it might have something to do with the process:msmpeng.exe which both, windows defender and windows live onecare use. my suggestion is uninstalling windows defender as windows live onecare provides better protection and if your computer has 512 mb of ram or less uninstall them both and go to www.grisoft.com to download a free version of AVG 7.5 which has been given a 5 star rating the last 6 years at downloads.com. Hope this helps

Silly, you can't uninstall Windows Defender as it comes with every new Windows computer. Its like Windows Sidebar you can't uninstall it.

No you can't uninstall either Windows Defender or the Sidebar, but you can turn them off. As the original post noted, when you install Windows Live One Care anti-virus software, it turns off Windows Defender automatically. Since they both use the same search engine, MsMpEng.exe, and One Care provides more comprehensive protection, Windows Defender is not needed. If you turn it back on while One Care is operating, the two programs will almost surely conflict. You should never have more than one anti-virus program operating at the same time.

And touching on the comment about the Vista Sidebar: No you cannot uninstall it, but you can turn it off. Right-click on the Sidebar icon in the Notification Area and select Properties. At the top of the Properties dialogue box, unselect Start Sidebar when Windows starts, and click OK. Right-click the Sidebar icon again, and select Exit. The Sidebar is now off, and will remain off unless you start it manually either by entering "Sidebar.exe" in the Run dialogue, or by selecting Windows Sidebar from Start Menu\All Programs\Accessories. NOTE: If you use System Restore to restore your system to a point before you turned off the Sidebar, you will have to redo the procedure to turn it off again.
