When I tried to install MAP I get:
The Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit Setup Wizard failed while installing SQL Server Express Edition.
The SQL Server installer requires a reboot to complete the installation of SQL Server Express.

Please restart your computer and run the Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit Setup Wizard again to complete the installation.

I find my idea of installing Windows 7 did not solve the original problem. When I tried to install MAP, the SQL Server Express failed to install again. I was surprised that the Microsoft Windows 7 DVD was not bootable. At the time I let Windows 7 be install from within Windows XP SP3. Don't know if a clean install would have made a difference.

I next uninstalled Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition (ENU) This was apparently installed with something else maybe Windows Live. Renamed the SQLExpress folder to oldsqlexpress. Tried reinstall again. Failed again. This time after reboot I select install from the previously downloaded installation file and selected the new SQLexpress folder but again the installation fails.

Next, I decided to just install the SQLExpress from the SQLExpress. When the SQLserver Installation Center window opened I selected System Configuration Checker and find the failure is Rule "restart computer" failed. However, rebooting the computer does not correct the problem.

A search on Rule "restart computer" failed bought me to http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sqlsetupandupgrade/thread/afe08496-eb31-4cb4-a45f-9eb671eacbd2. The last entry was that a Logitech webcam claused the problem. So I uninstalled the Logitech webcam first then the application. The Logitech VID application was tough to uninstall.

Again, I tried the SQLserver install. A blue screen of death appears. Hopefully just the effects of two uninstall without a reboot. Tried install again and verified Rule "restart computer" passed. Exited and reran the MAP setup again selecting Install from previously downloaded installation files. Finally MAP installed.

    What happened after the reboot?

The same exact thing. I tried this three times.
I also tried to install SQL Express 2008 in the hopes that MAP would see the SQL Express 2008 and have to install whatever version of SQL Express that it installs.

Please try removing SQL completely (both add/remove programs, and deleting any remaining folders )before your install.

There is nothing in add/remove programs and deleting any remaining folders is a problem (got cannot delete instapi10.dll: Access denied, cannot delete batchpaser.dll: Access denied, Cannot delete Errorlog: It is being used by another person or program, etc  )

Wow sounds like this machine is in a funky state…

    Let us recap:

You installed SQL – but it’s not listed in add/remove programs.

You tried to delete SQL folders – but another user is accessing those files even though you just rebooted.

I’m beginning to believe your machine is having some serious issues.  Personally I would give it one last try to remove everything, MAPS and SQL, including all folders and registry entries and once I had determined that it was cleared I was try again.  Next steps would be backup images or reinstall of OS, or use a different machine.

Errors are different depending on file. There is no MAPS to remove as I didn't get past installing the SQL server 2008 express. There is no SQL to remove. There remains in programs filesMicrosoft SQL Server the folders 100 and MSSQL10.MSQLEXPRESS. I did try to install SQL server 2008 in the hopes I could then deleted it. The Microsoft Web Platform Installer install but the SQL server 2008 was grayed out so I could not install it. Tried to install MAPS one more time and it failed.

Look like I am at the end of what I can do other than reformat and install Windows 7.

Sounds like both MAPS and MWP installer believe that SQL is already installed on that machine, and in MAPS case when it tries to connect to this SQL it fails because in fact you do not have SQL installed.  I would guess that both of these problems exist because of some SQL registry keys and other remaining files.

Finally, before you wipe your machine, I would try to install SQLEXPR32_x86_ENU.exe directly.  You can download this for free and install separately from any tools.  If you still have problems installing SQL you will need to contact the SQL support people for help.

SQLEXPR32_x86_ENU.exe had been tried and I tried it one more time and got Managed SQL Server Landing Page has encountered a problem and needs to cloase. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I will end this threat and look for a SQL forum.

I'm not the original poster but I'm experiencing the same problem. The readme documents state that SQLServer Express should not be installed with the Assessement and Planning ToolKit are installed. I've made sure that it isn't and the Toolkit tries to install it. I'm prompted for a reboot, which I do. After the reboot and I restart the installation, I'm given the option to either reinstall SQLServer Express or use an existing installation. I select the option to use the existing installation but then I'm prompted for the location of the database. I haven't been able to find it. I've check folders and scanned the card drive but I haven't been able to find the database that the Assessment and Planning Toolkit created when it installed SQLServer Express. That's the problem that I'm seen and haven't been able to resolve and I think it might be techcoor's problem also.

I have installed the Assessement and Planning ToolKit on a couple other computers. With the computer that had the failure, there was already a version of the SQLServer Express and apparently the MAP install got confused because it has to install another copy of SQLServer Express whether or not one already exists. Then I could not deleted SQLServer Express.

My solution was to install Windows 7 on the computer which took out Windows XP SP3 and the SQLServer mess.

My hotmail account apparently screens out any alert from Microsoft forum so unless I check I don't know what replies I get to the items I posted.
