AnswerOld NetMon 2 - How to safely uninstall

One of my XP systems has an old NetMon 2 installation (which I cribbed via the .inf files). Does anyone out there know how I can safely remove it without scorching NetMon 3? It's been ages since I messed with it... I know, I could image my system and fiddle, but I thought someone might "just know"...

For our testing we used Control Panel to uninstall.  I'm not sure why you don't have an entry, but I suppose you could try using the right-click/uinstall on the INF file.

If the driver is removed, just run "nmconfig /install" from a command prompt and it should rebind and install the driver.  If this doesn't work, then I would just re-install NM3.3.  If you are still having problems, please contact us again and we'll try and help.

The only thing that NM3 shares with Netmon2 on XP and 2003 is the capture driver.  If you are not concerned about capturing at all, then you can safely remove Netmon2.x and not worry at all.  Since NM3 uses the same driver, it should indicate to the OS that it's bound to that driver and when you remove Netmon2.x, it should not remove the driver.  So this should be safe as well.  However is something should go wrong, let us know and we should be able to help further.

One minor issue you might notice is that the .cap association is lost when you uninstall Netmon2.x.  If this occurs, you can simply just reassociate them manually.

    Thanks,

Thanks, Paul. So can I just right-click/Uninstall the .INF file. I seem to recall doing right-click/install on the INF file to install it... I have no add/remove programs entry anyway. And if the driver is removed, a reinstall/repair of NM3? Sorry for the string of questions...

Finally getting back to this... sorry... I have an oemsetup.inf and netmn.inf file in the INST folder. Neither one offer an uninstall when right clicking on them. And there is no entry in the Add/Remove Programs. I don't want to scorch my system, so I'm hesitant to start trying to follow the info and manually removing things from the registry etc. Can you think of a safe way to proceed from here?

You are probably in uncharted waters, but fortunately both programs can exist without interfering with each other.  So at the very worst, you could do nothing and be fine as we move forward.  However, I think you'd be safe to remove all the Netmon2.x files from the program files directory as NM3 doesn't use any of those.  Furthermore, you could delete the registry entries for netmon2.x as well.

Since you still need the driver installed for NM3 to capture on XP, you don't have to do anything there.

While I can't %100 be sure this won't cause problems, I think it's pretty safe.
