We were running SCVMM, and the trial ran out. i uninstalled SCVMM and now none of our virtual machiens will start. When i try to start them i recieve the following message.

"this virtual machine failed to start"

I tried restarting the Hyper-V managment service and it will not start. saying,

"Windows could not start the Hyper-V Machine Managment Service on local computer.

Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified."

I the found the follwoing error in the event logs.

    Source: application error
    Event ID: 1000

"Faulting application vmms.exe, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e02864, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x00000000, exception code 0x00000000, fault offset 0x0000000000000000, process id 0xdc8, application start time 0x01ca4165d6720a93."

    and

    Source: Hyper-v-VMMS
    Event ID: 17040

"The authorization store could not be initialized: 'msxml://C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Virtual Machine Manager\HyperVAuthStore.xml'. Error: The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)."

I tried copying oiver the master copy of the XML file but it was removed with the uninstall.

    any ideas?

After much searching i found this post

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/thread/d6103439-93cf-4a92-baed-7c042fbe4cd9/

it describes a similar problem. it seems the resolution is to install just the local client portion of SCVMM. i hope this bug gets fixed eventually.

thank you for all your help.

My gut tells me this is due to SCVMM replacing the Authorization Manger default settings, and these settings not being restored properly.

    Take a look here:
    http://blogs.technet.com/m2/archive/2009/01/12/azman-permissions-for-vmm-managed-hyper-v-hosts.aspx

Also, did you remove the host from the management of SCVMM, or just power it aff and remove the SCVMM agent through add/remove programs?

i just removed SCVMM through add and remove programs. i couldn't get into SCVMM as the install had expired. I also did not set it up. so i really don't know much about it.

I found the registry key mentioned in the article, and thinking i could possibly repoint the reg key to the correct spot i searched my enitr server for a copy of the XML file HyperVAuthStore.xml

could not find a single entry. i made sure to search non-indexed, hidden and system files as well, with still nothing. Where is the original Hyper-v version stored?
