AnswerSCVMM 2008 R2 RTM 'needs attention'

I've just taken the plunge and upgraded my Win 2k8 R2 64bit ent. server to the equivalent R2 version. Nice and easy as it's 64 bit, in place upgrade.

Also upgraded System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 to R2 also.

All virtual machines function nicely with the HyperV manager but SCVMMR2 is not talking to the host, 'needs attention'. The release notes talk about using 'upgrade agent' but this is greyed out.

A search on this problem reveals earlier posts mentioning two updates being required, one for BITS. Both of these updates won't install on my box (not applicable to my OS) presumably because they're not relevant to R2?

Can anyone help me resolve this issue please?

Have tried to remove the host (local) with a view to re-adding it but can't do this either, probably because it can't communicate with the host!

    Hiya,

When you right click and select properties for your host, and click the status tab what does it say there?

    Kind Regards

    Hi,

    It says:-

    Overall Status: Needs Attention

    Connection Status: Not Responding
    Agent Status: Not Responding
    Agent Version: Up to Date
    Virtualisation Service Status: Unknown
Virtualisation Service version: Up to Date

For info this is a one box setup.

    Thanks and Kind regards...Jason.

    Hiya,

If you click the Administration pane and click managed computers what does it say at your host that has issues?
There is also a little something to check from this one:

    Hiya,

That explains your Greyed out - its running R2 Agent.
Also its not the Reassociation that is needed..

How long ago did you do this upgrade?

And have you tried to restart the Virtual Machine Manager Agent?

Did the upgrade yesterday which appeared to go smoothly.

Have just tried restarting the agent which I'd not tried before (restarted the whole box though) errored on stop but did stop (timely fashion!) restarted ok.

For info SCVMM seems to be stuck in trying to refresh the host (usually gives up after a minute or two) at the moment, can't cancel the job. If it does stop I'll try restarting the agent again.

    Hiya,

Another option is also to reinstall the agent.
Simply remove the agent from Add/Remove Programs  and install it from the SCVMM R2 media.

No need to reboot your server.

    Hi,

Refreshing finally stopped but no change.

I thought about re-installing the agent early on but it doesn't appear in add/remove as a program or update?

Just looked at the media and couldn't be sure where the agent resides, can you point me in the right direction? Though I might be able to re-install or repair with it....

    Hiya,

When you launch your SCVMM installation, you should get a splash screen where you can choose to install Server, Administration Console and Agent. - Amongst others :)

Agent being the one for you.

    Kind Regards

Yes found this (Local Agent) but just says it's already installed on the machine and is included. "There is no need to install the Virtual Machine Manager Agent separately"

Looks like it might be integrated into the main install now rather than a spearate item?

    Hiya,

I did a few seperate installations when I initially updated to R2.

Also I can see that I have it now.
Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager Agent (x64)

When you click the Local Agent - you do not get the option to uninstall or install, but just a "no need to touch it" ?

Yes just a 'no need to touch it' dialog.

I don't have the agent listed at all in add/remove...

    Hi Jason,

I just upgraded to R2. having the same problem as yours as indicated in host "Need attention". I can't run the two updates as my host is already running with SP2.

On the VMM, I just Right click the host and select Refresh. After try for few times, the host (R2) is back to OK.

    And i'm using SCVMM 2008 R2.

I recommend always using the VMMCA as a first step in troubleshooting SCVMM 2008 and R2.  This tool helps you identify common issues.

Ok to give you an update on my situation...

I raised a support call with MS. They carried out various traces and tests but then got me to try:-

Forcibly removing and re-adding the host - no change

Uninstall DPM whilst retaining data, re-install - no change

Uninstall DPM and lose data altogether (after backing it up) - no change after re-adding host.

Following this I made several attempts over a week or so to refresh or re-add the host (host was removable now unlike before).

Eventually on one attempt it must have succeeded, I re-added the host late one night and didn't even bother to wait for it to fail. Couple of days later I looked back and it was all ok!!

Since this happened I stumbled across a blog entry that seemed to fit my whole issue exactly and I wouldn't mind betting that the suggested fix would have worked for me at some point in the process.

Please see this blog entry for further info:-

SCVMM 2008 Error (2927) A Hardware Management error has occurred trying to contact server

I'd be interested to hear if this fixes the issue for any one else out there with this issue.....

    Kind regards....Jason.
