AnswerStudent version of windows 7

I am using the RC of Windows 7 and I am a student. I want to take advantage of the special student deal to get Windows 7 for 29.99. If I get that, will it allow me to do a clean install of Windows 7 or is it only an upgrade? If it is only an upgrade disk, can I not do a clean install from it since I went from vista to the RC? Would I have to reinstall windows vista to use the version of Windows 7 I would get from the student promotion (if it is an upgrade)?

The special student Windows 7 offer is an upgrade license for Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional editions.  In order to install it, you'll need to have a qualifying genuine Windows operating system installed, such as Windows Vista.  After you have reformatted your hard drive, installed and activated Windows Vista, boot to the Windows Vista desktop.  Insert the Windows 7 Upgrade DVD in the DVD drive and select either Upgrade or Custom Install (for a clean install).

Go to the link provided in the primary e-mail you received saying you were eligible for the offer.

Below the picture of the box and order info, there is an area that has a yellow shade, and says, "Need to join your school's network domain? Click here." Click on that link, and the product appears.

If you ordered the Home Premium version by mistake, you can call Digital River at 952-253-1234 to fix it.  I called and went through to customer support, short wait, explained I'd ordered the wrong version. They canceled my order for me, I then received the email cancellation immediately.  I placed a new order for the Professional version and all is good.

The promotion is also for Windows 7 Professional edition, its is just a little hidden behind some links and clicks when you are ordering it.

Ok thanks Carey. I will reinstall windows vista and then upgrade to windows 7. Can I use the Windows easy transfer to copy all my files onto an external hard disk and then use that for my new installation of windows 7? Also, I have never "downgraded" to an older version of windows. Can I format the drive after inserting the vista disk or do I need to format it while logged in to my current OS?

And betatestermax, I heard that I could get the pro version at the student price, but I haven't been able to find where I can select that as a choice. Do you have a direct link?

    Thanks!

I don't see it either, not even in the FAQ.

You may need to contact Digital River Customer Support.

    How do I Buy?

    1. Check that your PC can run Windows 7 with the Windows Upgrade Advisor.
    2. Enter your college/university email address.
    3. If you’re eligible, you’ll receive an email with purchase details.

"Program Description: Eligible students are allowed to purchase one license of the product below:

Carey and Sanmartin, you are not getting the point.

What the OP wants to know is:  How exactly do you order the Windows 7 Professional for students?  If you follow the links through http://www.Win741.com and then to Digital River, all you see is Windows 7 Home Premium.

Looks like you must fill out the form first (qualifying you as a student) before you can select the wanted version and submit an order for it. That the picture shows only Home Premium, is misleading because the FAQ on 741.com explains in detail "which version is best for you?".

Also when you add Windows 7 into the shopping cart, all it shows IS Home Premium, there is no selection for Professional at all.

I don't think a lot of CS students will be opting for home Premium.
