Can't boot without cd in drive
- I've just made a clean instal of windows 7.
Now windows will only boot if there's a bootable disk in the drive.
without the disk the eror is, courupted winload.exe with eror code 0xc0000428
with the cd it boots fine and works without any problems.
When i tried to boot from the disk, to fix the boot, it said that there is no compatible operating system.
Edit:
Never mind problem solved.
Solution:
I have a ide drive and a sata, i was installing on the sata.
The setup somehow set the ide drive active and named it system.
I disconnected the ide, installed windows and reconnected it.

Hi,
This issue also can be caused due to the Boot manager location was set to the other drive.
If someone encounter the same issue with Krispel, but cannot be fixed by changing the IDE mode to SATA mode, I also suggest try the following steps to check the issue.
Rebuild Boot Configuration Database (BCD) store
====================================
Note: Please ensure that the DVD-ROM is the first booting device. If you are unsure how to change this BIOS setting, please contact the computer manufacturer for more information.
1. When prompted to press a key to boot from the CD or DVD, please press Enter or the space bar.
2. Click "Next" and click "Repair your computer".
3. Highlight the item related to Windows Vista and click "Next".
4. In the dialog-box titled "System Recovery Options", click "Command Prompt" and type in the following command.
BOOTREC /REBUILDBCD
5. If the command is successful, please close the Command Prompt window and reboot the computer.
Good luck!
Arthur Li - MSFT- Hi,
I jump on this thread because I have the same problem and don't want to open a new topic.
I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. It worked fine for a few days. Then suddendly I have the "winload.exe with error code 0xc0000428". It also boot fine when I have the Windows install disk in the drive.
I tried what Arthur_Li said. The repsonse I got from the commande prompt was :
Total identified Windows installation : 0
The operation completed successfully.
Without the install disk it still does not work.
I also have 2 disk, 1 Sata, 1 Ide. Sata is the C drive.
Can you help?
thank you - HI again, I must say that I tried the solution proposed here :
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/8b24383a-cb60-443e-a8f5-00205dcb0bcd/
When I try to type this command in the prompt Window :
ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
I get a : System cannot find the file specified.
I made sure I type it correctly, multiple time. Same result. What I am doing wrong? The first command line work fine (Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup)
cheers
- HI, thank you for your help.
I did what you said.
When I restarted Windows from the CD, I entered the prompt :
Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
Bootrec /rebuildbcd
this time, after "ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old" I got no error, but no other feedback neither. But I though that was allright.
Atfer : "Bootrec /rebuildbcd", I got the same result as before :
Total identified Windows installation : 0
The operation completed successfully.
This time, when I restarted the PC without the install disk, I got that error :
File: \Boot\BCD
0x000000F
So obviously it changed something but not for the best. BCD seem to be missing now.
Any help?
Thank you
Thomas - Hi, thank you for your help.
In disk managment, my C drive is set as: Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary partition.
But my E drive is as as: System , Active, Primary Partition.
Does not seem right from what you said. But I don't know how to change that.
Result of the prompts :
dir /a c:\bootmgr :
Volume in drive C has no label
Volume serial number is xxx
Directory of C :\
11/04/06 06:36 333.257 bootmgr
1 File 333.257 bytes
0 dir xxx bytes free
dir /a c:\boot\bcd :
Volume in drive C has no label
Volume serial number is xxx
Directory of C :\
File not found
I guess that is my error, BCD is gone somehow when I tried the previous prompts. If I use dir /a c:\boot I can see the bcd.old file created previously, but apparently it did not create a new one to replace it.
thanks
- It worked !
First, the BCD was not on the E drive neither, it was just missing.
When I desabled the drive E, Windows would not boot even with the cd in, I had to boot from the CD and re-enter all the prompts mentioned before. Then, I had to reboot a few time using the repair function of the install CD (this time is did something, when before it could not find any errors).
Finally is boot ok without the CD. I quickly enabled the E drive again to copy all data to an other drive and reformat it, so I made sure there was nothing left there to confuse Windows.
So now it is all good.
Thank you a lot for your help and your time !
Regards,
Thomas
