I installed Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit edition today and it will not start without the instiallation DVD in the drive

If the DVD is not in the drive i get error message
"Boot disk failure insert system disk and press enter"

    My system consists of an

    Asus an8 sli deluxe motherboard
    AMD X2 4200+
    2gb ram
    GeForce 6800 GS
Highpoint RocketRaid 2680 with 2 raid array attached
    1st (2x300Gb in raid 0) OS installation
    2nd (3x1.5Tb in raid 5) Data
1 DVD RW connected to the 1st IDE channel on motherboard as master
1 CD RW connected to the 2nd IDE channel on motherboard as master

I have set the bois of the rocket raid to boot form the disk Windows 7 is installed to
I have set the bois of the motherboard to boot from hard disk. then in the hard disk option it shows the raid card as the first priority

When i installed windows I used the Raid drivers that i downloaded from the highpoint website for my raid card and for windows 7 64 bit. it then found both raid arrays as hard disks. I did it as a clean install and windows created 2 partitions on the OS hard disk one as the main drive and a seperate 100mbs as some kind system disk

Windows works perfectly if i leave the DVD in. I dont need to touch anything when it says press any key to boot from DVD, just wait about 5 seconds and then windows loads from the hard disk.

I hope that is all the information that all you guys and girls need to help me out.

If you need anything else please let me know

    Many thanks in advance

    James

I just had the same problem.

Note --- It might be possible to skip to the last step and it all work, but I'm listing what I did just in case it doesn't.

I think I had some other hard drive issues, but what I did was this:

    1) Made my Windows 7 drive "Active"
    A) Start Menu
    B) Create and Format Hard Drive Partitions
    C) Right clicked my Windows 7 (C:) Drive
    D) Mark Partition is Active

    2) I ensured no other drives were listed as active (Not sure if this matters)
    A) http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/147031-45-hard-drive-active-disable --- Used some other instructions but jnkevin's post contains what looks to be the same instructions. You probably need to run cmd as admin for this I'd guess.

    3) Copied Files from the Windows 7 DVD to my root directory of my Windows 7 install drive
    A) bootmgr
    B) bootmgr.efi

    4) Disconnected all non-OS drives so that Windows wouldn't get confused. (or so I wouldn't confuse it again.)

    5) Reboot --- I did this without the DVD in drive and it told me something was wrong with and that I should boot from the DVD and click repair.

    6) Reboot --- Elected to boot from the DVD this time. Selected my language, clicked repair. It made the changes needed and boots properly now. The loader doesn't look the same anymore... meh. But it works without a full reinstall, so woot!

    SpaceDog11,

Thank you for your resolution.  I am experiencing the same issue here. Where when I reboot , I can only boot windows with you the installation CD, which I bought from the retail store.
My thing is that since I already installed Windows 7 ultimate, I do now want to reinstall as I have everything sorted out.

    1. Now since I have two partions on my WD Velociraptor drive. Partition C and Partition D
I would just need to mark only partition C drive active and the rest inactive.

2.Then you would want me to overwrite two files from my WIN 7 install CD > to my WIN 7 C: Drive?
       A)bootmgr
       B)bootmgr.efi

3)Will then physically disconnect my other eSata drive

5&6. Will reboot PC twice- second time repair....

Please let me make sure the steps above I listed are correct before I proceed with this.

    Thanks

I am relieved to see I am not the only person experiencing this issue.  I too can only boot into Windows 7 when the initial installation disk is in the CD drive.  If I take the disk out, then the XP bootldr is used (which does not list Windows 7).  Let me start by saying that I am in a non-standard situation where a bootable XP drive was disconnected while Windows 7 was being installed on a seperate drive and was later reconnected.

I believe my problem is as indicated on the Tom's Hardware post reference above - two active disks.  Using the instructions provided, I made one of them inactive (the XP disk).  Hopefully this will allow me to fix my problem - but I'm not sure if I will ever be able to get both booting simultaneously.  I'll give it my best shot and report back.  Thanks for all the help folks!

    SpaceDogg11,
I was not able to copy the two files you suggested as windows stated that I do not have permission, and was unable to edit permissions.

Please clarify if the following path is correct to copy these files to. Also do you mean copy(where it would have 2 of the same file) or just overwrite?

    From CD/DVD drive:/bootmgr               TO              C:Windows\Boot\PAC\bootmgr

    From CD/DVD drive:/bootmgr.efi             TO              C:Windows\Boot\EFI\bootmgr.efi

    thanks

So the problem is that your c: drive or wherever your os is doesn't contain the mbr.  you need to run bootsect.exe.
NOTE: the following assumes you are trying to boot off your c: drive - if it is another letter you want to boot off of change it accordingly.

run cmd as admin (click start>all programs>accessories then right click Command Prompt >run as adminsistrator)
    type <path>bootsect /nt60 C:\  <enter> don't worry about the locking message

(where< path> is the location of your bootsect.exe file - if i recall it is in the installation disk /boot dir)

take that install disk out of your dvd drive finally!
    reboot
    done.
