Installing a shared printer on XP PC to a Windows7 PC

I can see the shared printer that I want to connect to, but when I try the Windows7 PC says " Opperation Failed. Can't created the file that has been already created" I can connect to the HP laser printer that's connect to the XP PC, but not to the UPS label printer that has been shared. Any suggestions out there?

I was using it this morning, listening to Amos Lee. I turned it off to watch some videos on the Internet ( paused the player and minimized to my desktop ). When I clicked on my iTunes desktop icon to listen to more music I was confronted with an empty library and the itunes tutorial page. I have just moved to Windows 7 and used the easy transfer file and my expansion drive to move all of my files from XP. Everything seemed to be working fine and I had even purchased some new tunes from the iTunes store. The easy transfer file is no longer in my expansion drive and I cannot find the missing files in my backup files in my expansion drive. I have checked the iTunes library XML file and it is virtually empty. I have found a few tunes in other files that were transferred from my old computer but my entire library seems to have disappeared. Windows 7 is brand new to me and so far I have been impressed. Any ideas anyone.

Devices and Printers empty - bad device experience

Hi,

I also am having a problem like "Devices and Printers no show." When I installed Windows 7 32-bit on mg 4 Gb Dell D830 laptop, the Devices and Printers screen showed several devices, like the mouse and keyboard. I added 4 network printers and a scanner and they showed as well. A couple of weeks later, the Devices and Printers window became empty. I added another printer from within Notepad, and still nothing showed in Devices and Printers. The printers, my scanner and other devices all work properly. When I plug in a USB memory key, nothing shows up in Devices and Printers.

I checked in my account's dmrcache\en-US directory, and there is one subdirectory in it, with a GUID name. I checked in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DeviceMetadataStore\en-US, and there are two files there, with names like GUID.devicemetadata-ms.

Even though I have no bluetooth devices, I tried stopping and restarting the bluetooth service to fix Devices and Printers as reported on several internet sites, but nothing improved. I don't think I have that problem anyway, because my Devices and Printers starts quickly and does not delay for a long time like it did with the people who had problems with the bluetooth service.

So, do I have a problem with WMIS? Has some device metadata disappeared? Do I have missing registry keys? Did a Windows Update kill my Devices and Printers?

Printer problems

I've just upgraded from Vista to Windows 7, and now my Dell A940 no longer prints. I scrubbed the computer before installing windows 7, so had to reinstall the software. Computer acknowledges the printer, but print jobs don't make it to the printer, even though the print box opens when print is ordered. Do I need some kind of patch due to the upgrade?

Hey,

So, i was a bit more leniant the first time i tried to do it, basically, it goes like this, I downloaded Win7 RC1 and the upgrade is doing alright except it had been upgrading for 17 hours and 20 mins, it was making very slowly progress with the last item .. switching the message at the bottom constantly between "Please Wait..." and "Transferring files, settings and programmes (395931 of 523838 transferred)" it had been on number that for at least 6 hours and 20 mins that i know of, basically, i restarted the machine and it began reverting back to vista, i've tired everything and it just isn't going to upgrade, tried at least 10 times now and it's just not getting past 62%, I don't understand what it's doing.

I'm really not sure how to continue anymore, what should i do now?

Specs are RAID0 SATA HDD's, 3GHZ Dual core AMD, 8 GBs of RAM, ATI Radeon HD3870 and I'm upgrading from Vista SP1 to 7RC1

What a nightmare!
Short info and question first. Details at end..

My system ended up with Win7 installed on two drives. One is brand new (and never started) and one is "recovered".
The new one is on the "first" disk. (disk 0)
The "Recovered" one is on the Second disk. (disk 1)

I want to keep the "recovered" one and remove/erase/format the new one.

Now the details:
This system started as
Win XP Pro (disk 0)
Win 7 (disk 1)
Dual boot

I finished up with the XP Pro and decided to format it. Windows would not let me do it because it was a system disk so I STUPIDLY downloaded a program which allowed me to format the drive.
This, of course, removed the files needed to boot my system and I could not boot into Win 7.
I tried repair and all sorts of other things... Finally I decided to bite the bullet and just reinstall.
When reinstalling it asked me where to install so I decided to install on disk 0 since that is the more appropriate place to do it.
When Win 7 was done installing and I rebooted I discovered that it then repaired my original install of Win 7 so I was in a dual boot situation that I described above.

I want to keep the recovered one but have no idea how to go about doing this without trashing my install again.
I have downloaded the program EasyBCD since it seems to be a recommended program. It appears to be Vista specific so I am unsure how to procede.
Obviously just poking around and "trying" things is NOT the way to go. :D

I've seen lots of different so-called "answers" to this problem. Some seem inappropriate, such as to edit the Boot.ini file and I am just unsure what to do.

Upgrade failure Vista to Windows 7: system crashes at restart during last stage of upgrade

I have tried to upgrade 3 times and same happened: system crashed into blue screen after second restart during the final stage of the install process (installing applications, setting up system) somewhere around 65%. After this the system restarts again and indicates an upgrade failure, sets back Vista.

I have an Acer 3810T notebook with pre-installed Windows Vista Home Premium, two months old. Used official Windows 7 upgrade kit provided by Acer / Mentor Media.

Ran Upgrade Advisor, but it indicated no problem or uncompatibility. Still I have uninstalled most of the programmes between the attempts.

No idea what to do, please, help.

Help Moving the User Profiles and Default Program Data Files Folder Location

I wish to move the Users and Program File Default to away from my SSD C: drive and onto the HDD's D:. I have downloaded and used the Windows 7 AIK and SIM to generate an answer file for just those two folder location customizations, I'll answer everything else manually. Run through a couple of installs and haven't gotten the desired results even thought my answer file validates. File is in a root directory of a flash drive. Install with the bootable install DVD. Questions:
1. Does the answer file have to be by itself on the flash drive?
2. Does the answer file have to have nearly a full unattended setup or can I just manipulate these two settings and conduct the rest of the install manually?
3. If there are no problems with my execution, is this code sufficient/correct for what I wish to do?

Windows 7 Home Premium With Two processors doesn't work

From the Windows 7 Home Premium EULA: "Licensed Computer. You may use the software on up to two processors on the licensed computer at one time.

A Microsoft support rep confirmed this via a support ticket (pasted below), yet all over this forum I find moderators saying that it does not.

Clearly I trust the EULA, and the offical support rep over a forum, but it's still not working.

Any suggestions?

USMT 4.0 printer migration XP to Windows 7 failure

Hi,

I have performed profile migration using USMT 4.0 from an XP machine to another machine running Windows Vista and successfully performed the task. However, when i performed the same onto a Windows 7 machine network printers did not migrate. PFB the config.xml file I have modified as per our requirements. Please suggest a solution ASAP as there is an urgent requirement. Outlook,desktop and favorites were successfully restored with printer migration being the only issue.

Hi, I'm desperate and I need help.

First, my system:
MB: nForce striker II formula i780
CPU: intel core 2 quad Q9550
GPU: nVidia GeForce GTX 280
main hard disk is a RAID-0 setup.

My problem is, that windows 7 fails, when trying to boot. I get a disk boot error and I'm asked to insert a system disk to boot. the only way to boot is to insert the windows 7 DVD. actually. at the moment, the problem is even weirder. right now, I can't even boot with the windows 7 dvd but only with a vista dvd.

some guy thought, it could have something to do with the S-ATA driver.

but as soon as I try to update/install the nForce driver (doesn't matter which version), I have to do a system recovery, before I can even boot somehow.

I really need help, please. thanks in advance.

Windows 7 Backup - System image includes non system disk

Hi,

I am trying out windows 7 backup, hoping at last that I won't need a 3rd party backup solution. So far so bad!

My first problem is how ridicilously slow the backup is, but this has been discussed at length elsewhere. My second problem is the backup stalls when I try to backup a folder which I know has got various bits of malware in. I am an IT pro and use the files in this folder for testing purposes. OK fair enough I guess, although I think the backup should handle this event a bit more elegantly. So I've zipped and password protected the offending files to hide them from the AV (security essentials by the way)

The final problem which I just can't understand is that when I try to create an image of my system drive, backup wants to add my D drive (which is purely a data drive) to the image. My D drive is huge and I don't want to include it in a system image. I keep my system drive lean and mean for exactly this purpose but now I can't back it up because the total size of C and D drives combined exceed the capacity of my backup drive.

I know for a fact that the D drive has no consequence to the system boooting or operating, I have disconnected it and windows boots up just fine. In computer management the D Drive is not showing up as a system drive, so why does windows think it is? And why isn't there a power user mode wher I can choose exactly what I want in a system image, I understand you're trying to make windows easy to use for the average Joe, but this lack of functionality and in depth control feels more like a Mac than windows.... and I hate macs.

So can anyone shed any light as to why my D drive is being flagged as a system disk, otherwise it's back to 3rd party solutions... AGAIN

Not sure what happened, but I keep getting the error:
Windows could not finish configuring the system. To attempt to resume configuration, restart the computer.

I tried to boot in safe mode and it gave me the same error.

Any thoughts on what to try or is this a lost cause?
I can't remember all the stats of the computer since it is a backup one, but it does surpass all the requirements.

I have bought and installed Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit edition) on a Dell Precision 690 equipped with dual Xeon 5160 processors. It only recognizes one of the two processors (ie, 2 cores).

From Google, I have found that people with similar problems in the past have been able to solve them with "MSCONFIG > BOOT > ADVANCED OPTIONS > DETECT HAL". Apparently this forces Windows to check that it is loading the multi-processor rather than uni-processor ACPI HAL. The "DETECT HAL" option appears to have been available in Win7RC, but removed in Win7RTM. (This thread, for example, refers: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=670125 ).

Can anyone help?

I need to replace the motherboard of my Windows 7 installed desktop with the EXACT SAME motherboard. A couple RAM slots of my old motherboard are not working and since it's still under warranty, I'm having the motherboard replaced.

The old and the new hardware are identical so I figure there should be fewer issues if I were to replace the mother board with a totally different one.
Is there any special procedure I need to do when swapping the old with the new identical motherboard so I don't have to reformat and/or reinstall the OS?

OK, we safely avoided Vista with our 500-600 users spread over 80 different companies but now we are stuck with win 7 and it looks like we are going to have to change the way things work. SO:

I want to know what Microsoft reccommends for our installation which consists of Access 2002 .MDE files, Visual Basic 6 .EXE files, and .DLLs.

Up until now we have been installing everything in in C:\Program Files\MyAPP. The primary applications, which are the .MDE files COUNT ON THE OTHER FILES BEING IN THE SAME DIRECTORY.

The program is ALWAYS installed for ALL USERS on that computer.

The problem is this: We FREQUENTLY update our Access 2002 .MDE files from files on customers the server. Here is what happens and has been working fine with win 2000/XP.

We put a new .MDE file on the server - with the a different extension (.NEW).

When the user runs our application C:\Program Files\MyAPP\APP1.MDE the following happens in APP1.MDE.

We MUST be able to seemlessly replace each desktop .mde file with the new files on the server, automatically, with NO user intervention.

1. It retrieves the path to the server data files (Access data) or Server update files (SQL) and then does a directory command to see if the file \\Server\OurData\APP1.MDE exists.

2. If the file exists it is opened and a custom version property is examined to see if the .NEW file on the server is newer than the current version.

3. If the file on the server is newer then APP1.MDE shells out and runs a small server VB app \\Server\OurData\AppCopy.exe and then closes.

4. \\Server\OurData\AppCopy.exe opens on the local machine, waits for APP1.MDE to close, then DELETES C:\Program Files\MyAPP\APP1.MDE and then copies \\Server\OurData\APP1.NEW to C:\Program Files\MyAPP\APP1.MDE.

This all worked fine up to XP but Vista and Win 7 seem to redirect things willy nilly with NO error messages whatsover (This is just WRONG). The result now is that we wind up in an infinite loop. Th program opens finds the new file, THINKS it copies it, the user opens the file again and the process is repeated ad infinitum. Win 7/Vista evidently redirect/save files with NO WARNNG! (WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!)

ADDITIONALLY, we have an installation program to install these .mde updates which is currently required to be run from the C:\Program Files\MyAPP directory. It unpacks the new .MDE(s), determines the path to the data, links the .MDEs to the data, renames the old .NEW file on the server, and then copies the NEW .MDE file to the server with the .NEW extension. This whole program fails when run from Vista or Win 7.

Addiotnal info:

1.We have no control over what operating system the user uses beyond insisting on Win 2000 or above.

2. We are running multiple Access 2002 MDE front ends which may be connected to either an Access back end or SQL server - customers option.

3. Some users at each customer use the runtime version of Access 2002. Some use the Full version of Access 2002 or 2003, depending on their requirements. The applications are NOT compatible with of Access 2007 (no reason why they shouldn't be, but they are not lots of code breaks.)

4. Our installation program ALWAYS installs the runtime 2002. Icons to run the full version are set up manually.

5. We have always insisted that our application must have full read/right/copy/delete rights to both \\Server\OurData and C:\Program Files\MyAPP.

6. 90% of our customers are SMALL (<10 users) and have NO MIS department. Things must work seamlessly without the intervention of anyone.

7. WE are small, we do not have the resources to spend months rewriting our Wise 9 installation program.

SO, the question is - What do we need to do to make this all happen, now, and in the future? Where do we need to put files? Do we need to change file/directory rights when we do an install? Remember our .MDE files RUN .EXE files and LOOK for those .EXE files in the same directory as the .MDE. Do we need to change that? Can we shell and run .EXE files from somewhere other than c:\program files.

Keyboard won't work in Windows 7 if I touch the touchpad after being in Ubuntu

Problem: After being in ubuntu and rebooting into windows 7 all is fine in windows until I touch the touchpad.

If I touch the touchpad at all, I am not able to type anything at all in windows.

If I boot in, and just use the usb mouse, that's ok it always works fine, and the typing is fine...until I touch the touchpad!

If I reboot a 2nd time then everything is normal.

This is a fresh install on windows 7 with ubuntu 9.04. Anybody have any clue at all why this is happening??

You know that, but I'm going to post this anyway.

I have a computer with 2 hard drives, and lots of partitions. I have XP installed.

I installed Win7 64 bit on an empty partition on the first drive by booting from the DVD. During the install, it restarted the computer. XP booted up. I found that Win7 setup had put bootmgr and the Boot folder on the first partition of the second drive.

In order to complete the installation, I had to tell the motherboard BIOS to boot from the second drive. The installation completed okay. But of course each time I wanted to run Win7 I would have to tell the BIOS to boot from the second drive. Disk management showed the drives in the wrong order. That is, the drive plugged into the SATA0 port was shown as drive 1, and vice versa.

I cured the problem by re-formatting the partition, unplugging the second drive, and re-installing. Amazingly enough, with only 1 hard drive, Win7 managed to get it in the right order. :) I later plugged in the second drive, and Win7 maintained the correct order.

This is not a good solution. I wouldn't be able to install Win7 on the second drive using this trick. It seems absurd to me. The BIOS gets the order right and so does XP. Why can't Win7 get it right?

The motherboard is an Intel DP35DP. I installed the latest BIOS revision, but it didn't change the drive scrambling thing.

Unable to Boot to DVD after Initial Install

Used Window 7 Install DVD created from .iso to create initial install. I have a SSD and was unsatisfied wtih the placing the default program file and profiles on the SSD, so I created a small Autounattend.xml file with the AIK and would like to do a fresh install using these modified settings, but now the Install DVD behaves as if unbootable. BIOS is configured to boot from DVD drive only and that still doesn't help. Can I use the current DVD to wipe the original install so I can start fresh? I can burn another DVD from the .iso, but it already worked once so I don't think that is the problem. Any suggestions?

having installed windows 7 i have resolved most issues. One outstanding one is that every time I reboot , when windows open I get a message that i must install microsoft.net 2.0 with a link. Having done this upon completion of the download i get a message that the software is not compatable and will not install. I have installed 3.5 with no result and will try the 4.0 beta if anyone thinks it will make a difference. This is a brand new laptop with plenty of memory

Window 7 downloading and Mounting issues

I was following the directions to mount windows 7 64bit as a .iso with the ImgBurn program and their directions on the forums because i have vista 32bit. However, when i try to mount the file on the DVD the only file on my computer is only a .iso file. There is no folder with all the sub folders as shown in the directions. What should i do to make a bootable disc to upgrade from vista 32bit to Windows 7 64bit or is there another way i can do this.

Windows 7 > first ntldr, now boot manager file missing

Installed Win7 Professional clean; worked ok till I re-booted, then got the ntldr error. Posted a question, answer was given to run the repair from the MS Disc; it seemed to take care of the problem. Let auto updates d/l & install and since, have been receiving the missing boot manager file message. What's going on here, this should have been a seamless installation; this is not the first time that I have installed software. Do I have to reinstall Win7 over the copy on the drive now or is there something I can do, to rectify this? I don't feel that the repair module is that good. Any thoughts???

Anyone help me apply a UK keyboard locale to an offline mounted WindowsPE image using DISM. Fed up having to use the US keyboard on the default WinPE image from the AIK, Would this work?

Dual Boot - XP & W7 -Question about partitions and drive letters

What I'd like to accomplish is a dual boot between XP and W7 which I know I can do. It's simple enough. However, I'd also like to use both OSs as if they were each on the C:\ drive and have each OS NOT see the other installation. I believe it can be done but am not sure how the situation can be handled with as little fuss as possible.

Here's what I have:

Two internal drives, Drive 0 is three partitions, first is primary/active containing a full version of XP Pro and is C:\. Second is also a primary but is where I want to install W7 (full version, not an upgrade) but it's not active. Third is known to XP as D:\ (Temp-Swap). Drive 1 is a giant extended partition with drive letters assigned appropriately (M - Media, P - Photos, S - Software, etc.)

I can easily install W7 on the second partition of drive 0 but it almost always installs as E (or higher if I leave drive 0 on when installing) and of course that creates all paths as E:\, not C:\. I can enter in W7 and remove a drive letter from the first partition and reinstall W7 so it installs as C:\ but, more often than not, it won't see the boot information written to the first partition which is active. If I make the second partition active, then invariably XP will not boot (W7 has issues too but they can be fixed by running bcdedit) because the boot information is still on C: but it's not active.

Not sure if that is enough info but there's got to be a way to resolve this.

I want three partitions on drive 0 with the proper one active but still having two priamary partions for each XP and W7 as well as the third partition showing up as D to each OS and for each OS to believe it's C:\ and not see the other OS partition. Each OS should still see drive 1 as an extended partition with the same drive letters for each logical drive.

Can someone point me to a tech document that might help or maybe you know off the top of your head how to best arrive at this outcome?

I am attempting to install Windows 7 on my desktop computer, but upon loading the installer's background and the mouse cursor, it gets stuck for a bout 2 minutes, trying to read from the dvd and finaly... blue screens with the following error:

My laptopo is bran new, i made memory tests, hdd test.. so please dont ask me about this kind of things, because its not such a problem, if u want to help me with this very buggy and ____ release of windows please do.. cause i am loosing my pacience
Btw, I am trying to do a clean instal from an original microsoft dvd (so its not that either.. or mayb it is and i should have burned my own and not pay the extra 9pounds for it)

my comp specifications are:
Alienware M17x
Intel core2dua cpu T9300 @2.50ghz
4gb ram
Nvidia gGeForce 9800M GT

Honestly I tryed everything i knew and nothing helped... its just some kind of incompatibly with win7 and my system, witch i dont find normal at all.

Please give me a word, i dont care about 50 damn pounds and on yet another very faulty microsoft product.. but i dont like to get ripped of like this, and i want to make it work. Ive been reading the forums and i cant imagine how win7 can have such a buggy instalation proces, too many errors tbh.. but anyway, enaugh with the wining... any solution to this? since my manufacture says its defenetly not a hardware problem, and that i must take it up with microsoft..........

I recently upgraded my system from vista 64 to windows 7, and when I tried to back up received the following error message:
The backup application could not start due to an internal error.
The specified service does not exist as an installed service. (0x80070424)
(1) There is a "Windows Backup" in Services.msc.
(2) "wbengine" folders are missing from the Control Set folders in Hkey_local_machine

Windows 7 doesnt get load after installing it

Greets.
Everytime i try to install windows 7 in my other computer after the "completing instalation" part, the screen goes black.
if i reset the computer the starting windows screen appears for like 10 secs, then black screen again.
I've tested the windows cd in the sandbox in my other pc, nothing wrong with it.
My pc is a medion one and it had windows vista HE installed.

PS.The problem is only with w7, every version of vista works.

Installation Extremely Slow - Hangs during Expanding Windows Files

I'm trying to get 7 to install and I'm having a bear of a time. It has taken a tremendously long time to cycle through the steps and after a little more than an hour, it was only at 6% of Expanding Windows Files.

I've taken a stick of RAM out bringing me down to 2gb, have tried three burns (one at the slowest speed and verified), neither has helped. Please help.

My system specs:
5400+ Black Edition (non-OCed)
Abit AN52 Motherboard (nForce 520)
OCZ PC-6400 4gb (2gb during install)
XfX Geforce 8800GT
Western Digital Raptor x2
