Questionhow to disable autoplay in windows media player, normally play FLAC and watch AVI with two or more audio streams

0x1) is there a way to disable annoying autoplay feature in windows media player: when i play music in "now playing" mode and insert a disc which contains some video WMP stops playing music and asks me to play that disc or starts playing without any questions (e.g. when i insert DVD). in addition when WMP asks before playing it proposes three options: resume playing, go to library and play previous list. choosing "resume playing" you'll not resume the music just played, you'll start playing inserted disc. if you choose "play previous list", it also won't continue the playlist i was just playing, rather a playlist or track before the one i was just playing! very strange behaviour, isn't it?

note that this happends only in "now playing" mode, when library is active everything works fine.

please don't tell to go to control panel and change autoplay settings: it takes no effect. it works when WMP is not started or if WMP is not in "now playing" mode, otherwise WMP ignores that settings and demonstrates his "very intellectual"automatic playing.

0x2) when playing FLAC files windows media player doesn't show progress indicator, it always is positioned at the beginning (or at the place where you've positioned it). if i select multiple FLAC files and click "play with windows media player" it will play only the last file from the selected list.

0x3) when playing AVI files with two or more audio tracks WMP plays only one of them and gives no opportunity to change autio track. in wmp of vista it plays all the audio tracks at the same time (!).

If there is no solution for these problems, please tell me where i can send a feedback about my complaints?

Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Under the "AutoPlay" heading click on "Change default settings for autoplay".  You probably want to change the settings to "Take no action"

please, i have already asked not to "tell to go to control panel and change autoplay settings: it takes no effect. it works when WMP is not started or if WMP is not in now playing mode, otherwise WMP ignores that settings and demonstrates his 'very intellectual' automatic playing."

Installing WMP Tag Plus should fix this issue.

i have just downloaded and installed WMP Tag Plus. this plugin helped me to resolve another problem: tag support in FLAC, but WMP doesn't show progress still. after installing plugin when i closed plugin configuration window WMP reported me that some problem was occurred and therefore it disabled optional plugins. i manually enabled it and had no more errors after. my OS is windows 7 ultimate x64 build 7600.
as far as i understood, you are the author of the plugin, so i'll wait for the newer versions. i think, it would be a good thing if WMP could see album covers included into FLAC.
i am a programmer and i'm interested in developing of such software, can you tell me where i can find some tutorials or another helpful information about developing plugins for the windows media player?

Looks like WMP crashed when you closed the plug-in's configuration window :/ Does this still happen when you open the window and close it again? (it can be opened through WMP's Options - Plug-ins - Background - WMP Tag Plus - Properties) It would be a great help if you could send me the corresponding problem report: in Control Panel, type "problem reports" in the Search field, click View all problem reports, look for the Windows Media Player crash report, and copy/paste its technical details to your mail. You can find my e-mail address on my website.

About WMP not showing progress, do you see the length of the FLAC files in the library? If not, you probably need to delete them from the library, and re-add them through Tools - Advanced - Restore deleted library items. This will allow WMP Tag Plus to read the files' metadata, including length, which should in turn make the files seekable while playing.

The plug-in currently doesn't handle album art, but this might be added in a future version.

A good place to start if you want to develop WMP plug-ins is the WMP SDK at MSDN .

no it doesn't. after the error i manually enabled the plugin and had no more visible problems.

It would be a great help if you could send me the corresponding problem report: in Control Panel, type "problem reports" in the Search field, click View all problem reports, look for the Windows Media Player crash report, and copy/paste its technical details to your mail. if your website is http://www.bm-productions.tk, i didn't find e-mail address there (only a link "send us e-mail", but it reports that my default e-mail client is not properly installed). i have sent a report to the address specified on the WMP Tag Plus "about" tab.

i see the length of FLAC files in the playlist. FLAC media is included into library as "other media" and WMP doesn't display a column "length" for this type of files.

i have sent a report to the address specified on the WMP Tag Plus "about" tab.
Thanks for the report. Unfortunately, I need more information (such as a crash dump) to find out the actual cause, which isn't possible since the crash only happened once (unless the LocalDumps setting is enabled on your system).
i see the length of FLAC files in the playlist. FLAC media is included into library as "other media" and WMP doesn't display a column "length" for this type of files.
That definitely means that the files need to be re-added. On re-adding, WMP will put them in Music instead of Other Media, you should be able to see their length, and they will be seekable while playing.

yesterday i copied a new folder with FLAC music to my computer. WMP automatically added it to the library and WMP Tag Plus opened a congiguration dialog again (i don't know for what reason). this time no errors happened.

i re-added my media to the library, now wmp displays all tags and lengthes in the library, but not a progress.

Which DirectShow filter do you have installed for playing FLAC files? I have done some testing and noticed that the madFLAC filter doesn't show progress when playing FLAC files in WMP, just as you described. Uninstalling madFLAC and installing the Xiph.org Directshow filters fixed the problem.

i use K-Lite 5.2 full codec pack. in the k-lite codec tweak tool report i see madFLAC.ax installed. i'll try the Xiph.org filters.

problem #1 and problem #3 are not solved yet :(
it seems to me that microsoft supposes that this annoying autoplay is user-friendly, i created this topic three moths ago and still no answers from them. solution for the second problem was provided from the independent developer while windows media player itself still has no support of popular FLAC (i think it's because this lossless format is an opensource concurrent to windows media audio lossless).

Problem #1 try -  Group Policy Editor-> Administrative Templates->Windows Components->Autoplay Polices->Turn Off AutoPlay=Enabled. Do this for User Configuration and for Computer Configuration.

Maybe, I misunderstood something, it seems to me that in such way we can configure autoplay settings in operating system to disable immediate starting of setup file of programs and the music on audio media, but the goal is just to make windows media player less aggressive. I don't want to turn off setup autorun and, maybe, I even have no objections to automatic music playing, but I don't like the behaviour when WMP starts doing this while playing other music.

As noted, it's not AutoRun, it's the player responding to the device insertion notification (auto insert notification).

    Options:
A: don't be running the player when you insert something if you don't want the player to (dumbly) try to make the generally sound guess that you're about to want to play that
B: be already doing something in the player so that the player understands it's already running for a reason and doesn't bother switching over

When the player is sitting around doing nothing and you insert something, it figures that there is a reason it was running and that there is a reason the media was inserted.  That may be a bogus assumption for your content, but that's the general logic as meant to improve the lives of the many gabillion people confused by how to play their media. =\

The followup question is "hey it'd be cool if other than turning off AIN there was an off switch", and that's an excellent suggestion that has been noted.

this is not autorun. It's called Microsoft syncronization.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Windows-Media-Player-Sync-frequently-asked-questions

But I dont see some of the controls mentioned in this FAQ in WMP12. Strange.

Syncronization is also a problem, because I don't see how to turn it off for my flash drive. When I plug it in WMP always switches "now playing" tab to "sync". It is a bit annoying, but, fortunately, it doesn't interrupt the playing (maybe, because I don't store music on my flash drive). The mentioned link http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Windows-Media-Player-Sync-frequently-asked-questions seems to be about windows vista (not windows 7).

Anyway, "In the Player, sync is the process by which digital media files are copied from your Player library to a portable device, after which you can play the files on the device." How is it connected to the problem #1, which is rather about CD/DVD?

    Hello zachd!

I'm sorry to say that I am still having the problem as of today (01/27/2010), with all current system patches in place.

I can play a single MP3 song, or an entire album, and no matter when I insert a music CD, the MP3s stop playing, and Windows Media Player suddenly loads the first song on the CD against my expressed wishes (having disabled ALL AUTOPLAY options).

I would hope that since Windows 7 is doing so well in the press currently, that there is possibly someone within Microsoft who would be interested in fixing this sooner rather than later?

I can confirm that the problem of WMP spontaneously deciding to play random media files from a newly inserted CD/DVD is a real one. I just found this thread after being annoyed by the behaviour one too many times (I inserted a mainly data disc with a few sound bites; the music I was listening to stopped, and the sound bites started -- annoying!). Sad to see there's no way to alter this behaviour!
