My intranet connection was working until that update for IE8 this week, now I can no longer connect to my Linux server on my LAN. I will cite that more web page views occur on an intranet than the internet according to major studies.

    This needs serious attention.

    Hi
you said its ok if you use the ip address. This would indicate a dns problem. Have you tried looking in ipconfig or your host file for any errors. Also try to ping the dns servers using ping in the command console.

    Hi,

I would like to confirm the following questions first:

    1. Which update was installed on the computer? Was it the KB976749 update?

    2. Does the issue only occur when accessing Linux server? Does it occur when accessing other external websites?

At this stage, it's highly recommended to perform a System Restore to check whether the Linux server can be accessed or not. If not, this issue can occur by other factors.

Otherwise, I suggest you download the update manually in Microsoft Download Center and reinstall it again.

If there is any error message, please upload it to Skydrive (www.skydrive.live.com) and share the link to me for research.

    Thanks,

    Novak

If I use the IP address it connects in FF or IE. Its the URL loopback that seems to be out of order.

Checking the control panel, that was the update (KB976749) that caused the problem, rolled back and it wants to install again. Guess its defective.

Machine was unbootable and I used the restore recently after my VX-2000 caused Windows 7 to freeze outright. So much for Microsoft hardware.

I can connect to here, there etc.

When the update is reoffered, please uncheck it in Windows Update and hide it temporarily. Then check whether everything is working fine without the update. Please let me know the result.

If the issue persists, please perform a Clean Boot to check the result. If the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, we can use a 50/50 approach to quickly narrow down which entry is causing the issue.

I tried that, still cannot connect. Very annoying as now I cannot post articles to my sites.

I going to have to use MSCONFIG and strip everything out. I do recall all manor of problems with the web-cam VX-2000 which really seems to be buggy and far from production ready. LifeCam3 should be marketed beta.

MSCONFIG need big time updating to be able to be useful, for examply there is no choice to enable just the network stack etc. Manually it is not trivial to find all the components.

Testing all major browsers, IE, FF Safari and Chrome, nothing works anymore suggesting a driver fault.

MSCONFIG has so many options with dependencies its almost impossible to identify the groups correctly.

I decided to graunch the problem.

    I edited /windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts

and added the servers LAN address to the DNS list, now Firefox can connect so this should be make sticky so other with intranet problems can deal with the problem.

You can enumerate as many servers as you want this way, its an very old way that the internet worked before DNS became more available.
