AnswerWorkgroup DNS Server not forwarding or hitting root hint servers

    Hi,
I have 2008 R2 installed on a public facing IP.  Nothing else is installed nor is the server part of a domain (it's still just in a workgroup).  Pinging works great and if I set the server to an external dns server, that works great too.  Installing DNS on the server is where I'm running into problems.  I point the server to itself as a DNS client and it'll resolve any DNS entries that I put into the server but will not forward DNS queries to root hint servers or a DNS forwarder if I enter one.

There is no "." zone making the server think it itself is a root server.

I tried disabling the firewall and even setting the NIC to private, anything I could think of that might be stopping this.

I have a feeling there is an easy solution to this I'm just not seeing it.  Any help woudl be appreciated, thanks.
