Help with Hyper-V Server R2 remote management
- I know this has probably been asked so many times on here but I can't find a solution to work for me.
I have Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 on one server and a Windows Server 2008 Standard running as Domain Controller and DNS on another server. The servers are located at a datacenter. I can RDP into the Domain Controller and connect to the Hyper-V Server using Hyper-V Manager without any configuration on the Domain Controller server. I have created a Windows 7 Enterprise virtual machine on the Hyper-V server and was able to control the Hyper-V Server using Hyper-V Manager without any configuration on the Windows 7 virtual machine.
The problem is I cannot connect to the Hyper-V Server using Hyper-V Manager from my home location on Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 Standard computers. I have joined the home computers to the same domain as the Hyper-V Server but no luck.
I have followed the directions at http://blogs.technet.com/jhoward/archive/2008/03/28/part-1-hyper-v-remote-management-you-do-not-have-the-requested-permission-to-complete-this-task-contact-the-administrator-of-the-authorization-policy-for-the-computer-computername.aspx and http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/HVRemote but no success. HVremote gives error Cannot perform async query against root\virtualization. All admin accounts have local and remote enabled for Root/Virtualization in WMI.
The DNS server recognizes my home computers with their 10.x.x.x internal IP addresses. I only have one external IP address provided by my ISP. I have changed the entries for my home machines on DNS server to my external ISP IP address but still no luck.
I have disabled all firewalls on both the Hyper-V server and home network. Hyper-V Manager gives me the complete Actions menu but in the virtual machine field window, it gives error RPC server unavailable. Unable to establish communication between 'server ip' and 'home machine name'.
Is Hyper-V Manager not working from my home location because my servers and remote management machines are on 2 different networks?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice regarding this issue.

Hi,
According to the description, you can working on the Hyper-V host and VMs through RDP or Hyper-V Manager properly, so there is any problem with your Hyper-V computer and the VMs. Now you want to connect to Hyper-V host machine and the VMs(I suspect they are at your office) from your home, so the issue is more related to network.

>> You are partly right. If you want to connect to your Hyper-V computer from the Hyper-V Manager at your home, I think you should set up a VPN first. Or you can RDP directly to your Hyper-V host machine and then manage the VMs there.
We have a post discussed the similar issue, you can refer to:
