    Hi,

You’re right, Windows XP VM doesn’t support VSS online backup.

When backing up Hyper-V Host, please first enable Windows Server Backup support for the Hyper-V VSS Writer. Please refer to the following article.

    http://blogs.technet.com/askcore/archive/2008/08/20/how-to-enable-windows-server-backup-support-for-the-hyper-v-vss-writer.aspx

Please note the limitations and expected behavior.

After that, try to save or turn off Windows XP VM when backing up. If you would like to back up XP VMs, please run backup software in VM instead.

    Thanks.

I find out that the backup failed because I had a WinXP guest in the VMM. It seems its not possible to run VSS with WinXP OS. With 2k3 guests its ok, it runs perfectly.

If you are looking for a more enterprise grade backup solution for Hyper-V, I'd take a look at Hyper-V enabled backup products, like Microsoft Data Protection Manager.  Backup Exec also has a supported plug-in.
