WS08 R2 Enterprise, probs adding additional vhds via scsi controller, IDE connections work fine
- Hi
When I add another vhd (whether VM is on or off) via the scsi controller in hyper V, i get the following message;
Log Name: System
Source: VDS Basic Provider

Unexpected failure. Error code: 490@01010004
When adding the same VHD via the IDE controller, it works fine. I've tried it with different VHDs and different VMs on the same host machine, same problem. OS is Server 2008 R2 Enterprise.
Any ideas?

Hi,
OS is Server 2008 R2 Enterprise
>> Did your Hyper-V host machine and the VM are all Windows Server 2008 R2?
By the way, I can’t reproduce the issue at my end. Please check whether you get the same issue on some other VM.
In addition, I’d like to confirm the place you stored the additional VHD file.

- Thanks for your response Vincent.
The host machine is an 08 R2 Enterprise, along with 4 guests with the same OS.
I have since created another VM using W2K3 R2, and this does not suffer from the same problem (adding VHDs to IDE or SCSI is fine).
THe additional VHDs are stored on a separate partition to the 'root' VHD. But even if i move/copy the VHD to the same location as the 'root' ones, I see the same problem. Just doesnt seem to like the SCSI controller for some reason.
Both partitions are sitting on the same virtual disk (RAID 5).
Let me know if have any ideas whats causing this error or more info.
Thanks!
Hi,
As you mentioned “Both partitions are sitting on the same virtual disk (RAID 5).”, could you please provide more information about this scenario.
By the way, how about to attach a VHD file on your local disk instead of RAID 5?
Vincent Hu
- Sorry, I meant RAID array rather than virtual disk.
To clarify, we have a Dell T610 with 6x HDs.
The first two are a RAID 1 for the host OS.
The next 4 are a RAID 5, which is then divided into 2 virtual disks.
The first virtual disk is to host the VM 'root' vhds, the 2nd hosts the VM 'data' vhds.
Does that clear things up a bit?
I've tried attaching a VHD file from the local disk (RAID 1) as well, but still get the same error. Again, the error only happens using the SCSI controller, not the IDE.
Do you have any other ideas? I've noticed nobody else seems to have this prob, if I dont get anywhere I'll need to reinstall the host OS with R2 then reconnect / recreate the VMs. If I still get the same prob, there's not much i can do apart from consider an R1 install on the host.
Hope you can shed some light, and thanks for your help so far.
Hi,
Yes, I haven’t seen this issue in the forum. I will contact our product team to perform the further research and let you know ASAP.
By the way, I’d like to confirm the version of your Windows Server 2008 R2, is it the RTM version?
Vincent Hu
- I can confirm it is the RTM version.
Thanks
Look forward to hearing from you. Despite my best efforts, and many hours of installing and reinstalling we have managed to get nowhere.
I have now recreated the problem on another server (Dell PowerEdge R805) at a different site, and have used 3 different sets of media. The first being a RTM dvd, then another RTM dvd and today the ISO direct from the MS Licensing website (SW_DVD5_Windows_Svr_DC_EE_SE_Web_2008R2_64-bit_English_X15-59754.ISO).
To clarify, I've done;
1. A clean install of Server 2008 R2 (nothing changed apart from keyboard layout to English UK) onto 2 different servers.
2. Updated latest OS patches (Windows Update) including a reliability one i was hoping would fix it. Reboot.
3. Install Hyper V role. Reboot.
4. Create some guest virtual machines (Server 2008 R2) on local disk, using both a) ISO from MS www, AND b) physical RTM dvd (passthrough from host)
5. Created some test VHDs sitting on local disk
6. Attached test VHDs via SCSI controller
7. See error as first stated on either VM

8. Try attaching same VHD via IDE. No problems.
As mentioned previously, the error only seems to come up when the scenario is an R2 host with R2 guest VMs on it. If I build a non R2 guest (e.g. Server 2008 or 2003 R2, there is no problem attaching VHDs via SCSI, on the same hardware/physical servers).
Can someone please shine some light? We have a couple of rollouts being held up by this problem, and I'm keen to solve it before we start building servers on shaky foundations if you will. Does R2 really not support R2 VM guests using the SCSI controller? Is the VDS service started on your host and VM?
Joseph Noga MCITP, MCSE, MCSA, MCTS CCNA,CCDA,CCVP Managing Consultant Artemis Technology LLC- VDS is by default set to manual. I've not made any changes to the installs at all. VDS comes on when i open diskmgmt.msc to bring the new VHD online.
The exact error only pops up once as soon as I initialise the VHD on the guest VM.
- I'm seeing similar problems to yellowsysengineer, surely there must be other people out there trying to feed the guest R2 VMs another VHD via the SCSI controller?
Or is everyone just using IDE and too scared to speak up?
- I have hit the same problem using recently downloaded R2 datacentre iso
Have done a clean reinstall from scratch and tried guests using same R2 iso on newish Dell server
R - I'm also getting the error message:
Unexpected failure. Error code: 490@01010004 from the VDS Basic Provider.
Hyper-V host: Windows 2008 datacenter edition (Dell R900)
VM: Windows 2008 R2 enterprise
I'm not experiencing any problems with the server, just the error messages. - we've launched a support call with MS, they have identified there is a real problem after recreating it at their end.
Im told they have a development team working on it now, I will post details of any resolution they come up with.
