    I am migrating a 1100 user Exchange environment from 2003 to 2010

    I have 2 physical servers:

    Dell R415
Dual AMD Opteron 2.6 Ghz processors (6 cores each)
    32 GB RAM
    Dual NIC to the Network
    Dual NIC to the SAN

and 2 Virtual servers running in Hyper-V

I have heard 2 different ways to configure the Roles:

    1) HUB and CAS on the same Hyper-V server - repeat this with the other Hyper-V server for load balancing and failover
    1) MAIL on physical servers - failover, load balancing, DAG, etc

    or

    2) CAS on Hyper-V servers
    2) HUB and MAIL on physical servers

Since the physical servers are more powerful i felt the HUB\MAIL combo made more sense. anyone have experience combining roles and can provide comments?

    thanks

    tony

either way will work. I have all roles running on VMWare

You can't have Mailstore and CAS on the same server because DAG doesn't support WNLB. However, if you will utilize a hardware balancer it won't make a difference
