Move Exchange 2007 to New Domain/Forest -keep existing hardware
- Hi All,
Q) A client of mine wishes to move their single Exchange 2007 server to a new domain/forest due to the poor single labelled dns config in their current domain.
Plan is build a new Forest and Domain (new FQDN) and to create a trust with the existing and new domain however what are the options with exchange 2007 when there is no other hardware avaliable. IE- they only have 1 exchange server.
- can you reformat, re-build, join to new domain then using the database portability method remount the database ?
- Exmerge data? or use the export-mailbox cmdlet - What about public folders? will this affect free busy info?
please let me know your thoughts - other option would be to source a low spec'd exchange 2007 server, join this to the new domain/forest and perform a cross-forest migration, move all mailboxes, then rebuild the Exchange 2007 server into the new exchange 2007 organisation then move the mailboxes again....

- More or less depends on your requirements. If you want minimal downtime and a safe route, I'd suggest going for the cross-forest via (temporary) hardware. This will also make you more flexible since you can migrate step by step and have the original situation at hand for reference purposes, e.g. when you want to convert permissions.

Hi Richard,
I would like to explain that database portability feature is not available for cross org environment. For your reference:
Database Portability
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123954.aspx
The Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 database portability feature allows a mailbox database to be mounted on any server in the same organization.
To move mailbox, you may need to use Export-mailbox to export mailbox to PST files. For Public Folder, I am afraid that Microsoft does not have tool to move Public Folder contents offline. You may need to do it manually.
Regarding Free/Busy, if all the clients use Outlook 2007, I do not think it is a problem because Exchange 2007\Oulook 2007 retrieve Free/Busy from recipient’s calendar folder directly instead of Free/Busy Public Folder.

- WOW, that´s an amazing challenge...however there´s no option on same hardware between forest ...you need at least an x64 desktop to use it as temporary step.

Yes, pretty challenging!
I think we're going to source a temporary exchange server - join this to the current domain and migrate all the mailboxes to it.
then once complete, we'll blow away the primary exchange server, rebuild it in the new domain then run another mailbox (intra forest) migration...
a two step process, however this seems to be the safest option :)
