Windows Explorer Address bar clears itself
-
martes, 03 de marzo de 2009 22:43My computer is really smart. It even learned a new trick!!! When typing an address into the Windows Explorer Address bar (sometime refered to as the My Computer Address bar), I can get in a few characters and then everything get cleared out. I have run Antivirus and Anti-spyware tools without any warnings. I have co-workers who are experiencing the same symptoms. I was wondering if anyone has managed to resolve this issue as my google searches only reveal people experiencing the problem or blaming it in WiFi or VPN software (neither of wich is installed on my Desktop PC)

Hi Adrient, based on the current symptom, I suggest you try a free online virus scan on the following site:
For information about Security updates, visit the Microsoft Virus Solution and Security Center for resources and tools to keep your PC safe and healthy. If you are having issues with installing the update itself, visit Support for Microsoft Update for resources and tools to keep your PC updated with the latest updates.

viernes, 06 de marzo de 2009 15:43Finished the Live scan without detecting any viruses or spyware.
I did discover the cause of the issue. It appears to be a security hole or bug in Live Messanger released in one of the recent Microsoft updates. For security reasons I am a bit reluctant to post the cause on a public message board as I feel it could be exploited -

The true answer to this problem was NOT a virus, was NOT contact Microsoft Security team (though it did help) but the issue is with Live Messenger v8. The problem is resolved by upgrading to Live Messenger v14 for everybody.- Marcado como respuesta Adrient viernes, 13 de marzo de 2009 14:13

I had the same problem but with a different cause. I found that when I was logged into hotmail in IE8 the problem occurred. As soon as I log out of Hotmail the problem stops. The problem didn't occur when I was using IE7. Also the problem doesn't occur when I use Hotmail in Firefox, Chrome or Safari. I am using Windows XP.
I'm just posting this here in case others have the same problem because I had a very hard time finding the cause. I had to reboot and then start programs one by one testing windows explorer after I started each application. I hope this helps someone.

I just had to reply because I have been having the same problem for months and don't have Live installed. Never thought it was related to Hotmail page open in IE8.
Some programs affect others in strange ways. I use an old version of PC Anywhere and when it is activated the mouse goes to the center of the screen in intervals.
Thanks Andrew!

This just happened to someone in our office. No Windows Messenger installed.
IE8 with Hotmail open.
Windows XP SP3 all patches.
Windows Explorer open.
When you type something in the Windows Explorer address bar it gets reset before you can finish.
Anyone have a solution? Should we install Messenger and see if it fixes it?

Try to uninstall Bing Bar or switch it off with MSconfig utility (find mswinext.exe or MSN Toolbar there). This just happened to someone in our office. No Windows Messenger installed.

The problem is with a autofill option either somewhere on Internet Explorer or Windows explorer .
It has happened to me in the past and when I find the right location I will post it here.

Switch it off (Internet Explorer 8):
Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced -> Browsing -> Use inline AutoComplete (outside of internet Explorer) -
