Respondida Windows Virtual PC wont install, requirements met

I try to install Windows Virtual PC (Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg.msu), but

    - WUSA will say 'The update is not applicable to your computer'

    - Setup event log will record an event from Source WUSA, Event ID 3, Error: Windows update could not be installed because of error 2149842967 "" (Command line: ""C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe" "C:\Users\username\Downloads\Windows 8\Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg.msu" ")

My Windows version is EditionID Ultimate, BuildLabEx 7601.17640.amd64fre.win7sp1_gdr.110622-1506 which is Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Service Pack 1 (English) for the rest of us.

    To resolve, I

    - downloaded havdetectiontool but it reports 'This computer is configured with hardware assisted virtualization' and I verified by rebooting and indeed VT is ON in the BIOS.

    - I set DWORD HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\RegistrySizeLimit to ffffffff hex.

    - I downloaded the KB977206 but it shows the same message and logs the same event in the Setup Event Log.

    - I ran sfc /scannow but it finds no problems.

    - I tried getting some updates, but updates I receive through Windows Update install just fine (KB2538242 installed today).

    - Downloading the update requires Windows Genuine Advantage Validation, but the check succeeds.

Although this problem is reported about 50 times around the forums, I believe the conditions that lead to this message are unique and I did not find anything that would solve this problem apart from reinstalling Windows, which I really do not want to do. Please help.

    Thanks in advance, Eric

You need to use Step 2 and 3.  It is the Step 4 download that does not apply to you, because you have SP1 installed.

Sorry to report, I have a brandnew HP system with the same problem.  Window XP mode works fine, but I need to have multple copies of the virtual ,achines to run multiple versions of a mission critical package.  The error occurs in step 3.

I don't think you can download more than one XP Mode vm from Microsoft on a system.  If you need more vms you need to have the licenses yourself and create the vms with WVPC.  You should get an MSDN or TechNet subscription.  They are designed for testing.

We have MSDN subscriptions.  The problem involves being unable to install Virtual PC.

We have many licenses.  MICROSOFT is in the business of maximizing revenues.  If it was a license problem they would certainly state that since it impacts their bottom line.

Their web site states that one can freeely download and install Virtual PC.

Does anyone from MICROSOFT ever read these forums?  I have time constraints and installing yet another bootable copy of Windows-7 or Windows-XP on my laptop and having to shut down the main copy to boot into one of the otehrs is a colossal waste of time.

Where are the claimed benefits of virtualization?  Right now, I see none.  Software that doesn't work, is undocumetned and unsupported is a colossal waste of time and money.

    >Does anyone from MICROSOFT ever read these forums?

Rarely -- it's peer support mainly.  If you need real Microsoft
support, you'll have to call their product support line.

Anyway, you can only install XP Mode once, period, that's a
requirement from the licensing and the way they have it set up to
    install.

If you want more XP VM's, you actually have to create the VM's
yourself and install your MSDN copies in the VM's.

Here's a blog post describing how to create new VMs.

You can only install Virtual PC once, it is the application.  You can't install it multiple times.

With your version of Windows 7 you get exactly one license of XP mode, which is a full license usable in production environments.

While you may have an MSDN subscription, that doesn't affect the licensing of XP mode, these are 2 completely separate things.  MSDN licenses aren't production licenses.

You can simply install your own copy of XP once, then make copies or use differencing disks to make the number of copies you need up to your license limit from MSDN.

Why do you think you need to install bootable copies of Windows 7 or XP?  Virtualization allows you the ability to install multiple virtual machines, of which you need to supply the license and installation media.

What software doesn't work?  You've already stated XP Mode works.

    Hello!

    1) why would anyone create a new post when there is one already created there is absolutely no reason to create many posts for the same problem!

I am experiencing the same problem right now whether or not this is an old post or not the answers to solve the problem are still not out there!

this is a brand-new installation of Windows 7

I am trying to get Windows XP mode installed

    On the webpage http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

Download and install Windows XP Mode

Step one is pretty much nothing to mention!

step two: windows XP mode download

step three: Windows virtual PC download

step four: Windows XP mode update download

Step four is not necessary since seeing that I already have SP1

    step one: completed

    step two: completed

    step three: completed

    step four: not necessary

now that I have all of these things downloaded

I tried to install windows XP mode it gets all the way to the end of the installation and then pops up a box telling me sorry installation failed or something to that effect please try again!

So I figured I would go to step three: and try to install Windows virtual PC and that is when I receive that's the message 'The update is not applicable to your computer'

so I got online and started searching I did everything that the original poster here did but none of it helped

The part where I edited the registry there was actually no 'RegistrySizeLimit' so I created no big deal and then I restarted the computer did the scan no problems found try to install virtual PC again with the same error box!

so I am at a loss as to how I am supposed to install Windows XP mode when neither Windows XP mode for Windows virtual PC will install!

if anyone has figured out how to solve this problem without having to go through all the steps of the above from the original poster please do tell us all - how to FIX this problem!

because I do not feel like having to install a second operating system that I will have to use it boot time!

    Anyhow thanks in advance!

    sincerely secretsnake

    PS

to clarify the installation of Windows XP mode after download works it's the setup part that does not work after you download and install

you then go to %SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\VMCPropertyHandler.dll,LaunchDefaultVM/Windows XP Mode

basically you go to the start menu all programs and and open up the folder Windows virtual PC  and then click on the Windows XP mode to start the setup

this is where it fails when it gets to the end!

and I have no idea why there is a folder in the start menu called virtual PC seeing that I've not been able to install it in the first place and it is not listed in the add remove programs list!

Anyway again I hope someone has figured this out so that I may get Windows XP mode working!

I see - Well I meant no disrespect, is just that on most forums people ask the same questions over and over again creating new posts and you try to find answers having to sift through hundreds of similar posts!

anyways I'm going to give this a couple more days and just hope that someone will have the answer.

How to get Windows XP mode/Windows virtual PC installed and working!

if not I will just create another partition and install Windows XP! I just hope it doesn't come to that.

Please give the details on the host computer.  Make, model, cpu, memory, etc.

Well as to the make, model is a custom built PC.

    OS:Microsoft Windows 7 ultimate SP1

System type: AMD FX - 4100 Quad core Processor, 3600 Mhz, 2 Cores, 4 logical processors

Bios version: American megatrends Inc. P1,60 7/4/2012

    SMBIOS v2.6

    Physical memory (RAM) 8 GB

    GPU: Radeon HD 6450

    Direct X 9.0 C and Direct X 11

    Microsoft.net framework 4

    Microsoft's Visual C++ 2005/2008/2010 64 bit/32-bit

I cannot think of anything else pertinent to the subject at hand!

If you can think of any other information you think I might need? let me know. After doing research online everyone having the same problem all had different spec's for their computer with one exception that they all were 64-bit operating systems!

so it has most likely nothing to do with the specs provided! outside of maybe 64-bit!

anyway if there is any other information lacking! let me know.

I hope someone has solved this problem! and has a quick and easy resolution to it!

and I would like to say thanks on behalf of of myself and others with the same problem! to whomever comes up with a solution.  :)

    Thank you thank you! @Cbarnhorst

Your link led me on the right path to fix Windows XP mode installation setup! it finally completed successfully!

for everyone else who is having trouble and is unable to run Windows XP mode set up where it gets to the last 99.9% and then tells you "Could not complete Setup. Please try again."

If you have a AMD processor with the codename bulldozer!

    then follow this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2519949

Here is what that webpage says:

You cannot install Windows XP Mode on a Windows 7-based computer that has an AMD Bulldozer-based multicore processor installed

    SYMPTOMS:

When you have an AMD Bulldozer-based multicore processor installed on a computer that is running Windows 7, you cannot install Windows XP Mode. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following:

Could not complete Setup. Please try again.

    CAUSE:

This issue occurs because of a compatibility issue between Windows XP Mode and AMD Bulldozer-based multicore processors.

Needless to say you fall into this category go to the link above and click on the download button and follow the instructions!

and then you will soon be running Windows XP mode! :-)

Unfortunately this hot fix did not! WORK for Microsoft virtual PC installation!

when I try to do step three

I get the following error box: The update is not applicable to your computer.

I do not understand why I received this particular error if you want call it in error!

but to the point I am unable to install Windows virtual PC I hate not completing a full installation but at least I have Windows XP mode working that is what I really wanted!

again thanks so much for your help @Cbarnhorst

    Sincerely  SecretSnake

Simply use VMWare Player or VirtualBox.  Both support 64bit guests anyway, which WVPC does not.  If you manage to get XP Mode installed, VMWare Player will convert XP Mode from a WVPC vm to a VMWare vm.  It has a simple to use command to do so.

If XP Mode is working, then you have Windows Virtual PC installed.  You can't use XPMode without Windows Virtual PC.  If you're getting the error that the Windows VPC update doesn't apply, then it would already be installed.
