I am trying to get the Remote Desktop Gateway in Windows 8 Server Beta to run in a workgroup but I am having trouble finding out how to configure it. The “Remote Desktop Gateway Manager” does not appear to be installed with the role anymore. I have tried finding the MMC snap-in with no luck. Server Manager -> Remote Desktop Services -> Overview does not allow me to access the configurator and states something like "you are logged on as administrator on the local machine. You need to log in as a domain user.” – I will confirm the exact wording and repost.

I am trying to follow the 2008 R2 instructions and Terry Lau’s blog for installing in a workgroup environment.

I am using my server as the DMZ server which is configured as a workgroup machine as many companies will be doing. So I’m sure I’m missing something obvious. Any help would be really appreciated.

    1. During the installation, after selecting "Remote Desktop Services" as Server Role, it will ask for chooseing Role Services in several steps later. Please check if Remote  Desktop Gateway is selected to be installed.

    2. Currently it seems that we could not manage Remote Desktop Serivce in Dashboard of Windows server 8 Beta version. It should be temprarily. You could go to Servers instead of Overview, right click on target server and choose Remote Desktop Gateway to get the console.

You will need to use RD Gateway Manager to manage a RD Gateway server, just like you did in Windows Server 2008 R2.  You can either logon to the Gateway server directly and run RD Gateway Manager or you can add the RDG server to the Server Manager server pool and install the RD Gateway Manager on a remote server and manage the RDG server remotely.

The new RDMS console in Windows Server 8 Beta does not manage RDG or RD Licensing.  Please see the Beta guides for more information:

Edit:  FYI, Almost every scenario where you would be using RD Gateway and RDWeb requires domain joined machines.  This was true in Windows Server 2008 R2 and is even more true in Windows Server 8 Beta.
