    Hello,

By default when installing OS, is window media player installed on server 2003/2008? Also is there a way to disable WMP on server or block updates to media player? I don't want to use this OS component and yet there is no way to remove it.

    Hello Ibrahim,

Thank you for posting Windows Server Forums.

Based on your description, I understand you want to remove Windows media player or disable its updates.

As far as I know, If you do not choose to install Desktop Experience feature, Windows Media Player will not be installed automatically in Windows Server 2008.

In Windows Server 2003, there are dependencies in system components on the Media Player components similar to dependencies on Internet Explorer components. So you can not remove it, as a workaround, you can disable automatic updates in Windows Media Player. Please refer to the following KB:

How can I enable or disable automatic updates in Windows Media Player?
    http://support.microsoft.com/KB/278960

    Hope it helps.

    Best Regards,
    Wilson Jia

    Thanks Wilson,

What about server 2000, is WMP media player installd by default then? I put SP2 onto the server and now cannot recall if WMP 6.4 is part of the standard OS install without updates applied. If it so how would I remove it if possible? If it cannot be removed can I also disable the automatic updates as in W2K3 as you mentioned previously.

    thanks!

    Hi Ibrahim,

You can not remove the WMP which is installed by Service Pack. This is by disign. You only remove the WMP updates version from the Add and remove programs.

Yes, you can also disable the WMP automati updates in WIN2K. Please refer to KB 278960's Section Stop Windows Media Player from periodically checking for updates (not recommended) .

    Best Regards,
