Error message when logging into Windows 7
-

Hi -
I am trying to login an existing user on my network (Windows Server 2008 Standard). When I go to a Windows 7 computer and type in the credentials, it gives me the following message:
"The user profile service failed logon. User profile cannot be loaded"
So far I deleted the profile from the W7 PC and that didn't make any difference.
Has anyone had this issue?
Thanks,
Peggy

Hello Peggy,
Try to login into Windows7 machine using admin/other user credentials and check for the same, whether you get same kind of message or not?
Also check event viewer for event IDs recorded for this issue.

In Windows 7, you can not just delete the user profile like you can in Windows XP, and expect a new one to be created. This is what I usually do if a profile becomes corrupted:
If a user logs onto a Windows 7 machine and it says loading temp profile, this is an indication of either, the profile being corrupted, or just didn’t load properly. Have the user log off and then back on to Windows to see if the issue is resolved.
If the issue still arises, then reboot the machine and try logging in again. If the issue still is not gone, log in as an Administrator, open Computer and go to C:\Users. Find the users profile and rename it to <shortname>.bak (<shortname> is the users shortname). Log out and have the user log back in to see if it is fixed.
If the issue still isn’t fixed then we have to modify the registry. Log in as an Administrator click Start and type regedit and hit enter. The registry editor should be opened, browse to the following key:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
There should be a few keys underneath this key which represents SIDs. If there are multiple user keys, highlight one at a time and the look at the data contained in the ProfileImagePath, it will be set to C:\Users\<shortname>
If this is the proper key, highlight the key on the left side, right click and export, to make a backup of it. Once the key is backed up, go ahead and right click it again and click delete.
Once the proper keys are deleted, reboot the machine and then have the user log in to create a new profile. When the new profile has been created, you will need to copy data from the old profile to the new profile. Open Computer and go to C:\Users\<shortname>.bak, open it up and copy everything EXCEPT anything named NTUSER. You may not even see any files that start with NTUSER as they are usually hidden, but if not make sure you do not copy them.
Once everything is copied over, you will need to recreate the users drive mappings, printers and possibly some other settings, depending on their type of work.

martes, 05 de junio de 2012 17:42Yes, I apologize.. I have tried logging in as other users and it was successful. When I mentioned deleting the profile, it did remove it from the registery as you stated. I also, tried everything that you mentioned. Nothing has worked. :(

hmm weird, usually I always have the issue fixed, by renaming the profile under C:\Users, and then delete the registry key as stated above, reboot, have the user log back in and viola, the magic happens lol.
But if you just rename or delete the profile (I would rename so any data can be transfered) and do nothing to the registry entry, then a new profile will not be created.

Hi Peggy,
First, Try to connect to another workstation in the domain. Now, you know if the problem is user or computer object.
If the problem is computer, try first the "Network ID" in computer Properties, then to remove and join again to the domain the workstation. You can also use de comand "nltest /sc_reset:domain\domain_server" to resolve the possible replications issues.
if the problem appear to be user, it will be more complicated but you can begin reseting the password and check the profile configuration in user object (Active Directory)

Hi,
This is a known issue recorded in MS KB:
You receive a "The User Profile Service failed the logon” error message
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947215Occasionally, Windows might not read your user profile correctly, such as if your antivirus software is scanning your computer while you try to log on. Before you follow the methods here, try restarting your computer and logging on with your user account again to resolve the issue. If you restart your computer and it does not resolve this issue, use the following methods in above KB to resolve this issue.
And actually, I meet this issue several times before, follow Method 1 in above KB, it resolve that issue for me.
And I recommend using Method 1, although it looks a little bit complex. But you don’t need to copy user profile or recreate user profile, which may need long time to move data.
Please try that and give us feedback for further troubleshooting.
Hope this helps!

Okay, I set the value of the sid profile to 0, restarted the PC and I still can't login, same message. I can login with the domain administrator account but not as the user that has been created.
I also deleted the profile within the registery and that didn't work either.. is there anything else??

Do not reset any of the values of the sid profile in the registry, delete the entire SID key so HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\<this is a SID Key, delete me> Make sure you back this key up first before deleting, just in case.
Then under C:\Users, find the users profile and rename it to be something like, username.bak
Then try a restart and log in
Also, the user account your having issues with, can it be used to log into any other machine on the network?

Hi,
According to MS KB 947215:
This error may occur if the "Do not logon users with temporary profiles" Group Policy setting is configured.
This error may also occur if the user profile folder was deleted manually. A profile folder that is manually deleted does not remove the Security Identifier (SID) from the profile list in the registry.
If the SID is present, Windows will try to load the profile by using the ProfileImagePath that points to a nonexistent path. Therefore, the profile cannot be loaded.
We strongly recommend AGAINST making this the standard way to remove user profiles from computers. The documented and supported approach is by using the Advanced System Settings in the system properties, "User Profiles" settings. For programs, this is available by using the "DeleteProfile" API.
So as “clayman2” mentioned above, delete entire SID hive in registry.
Please try it and give us feedback for further troubleshooting.
Hope this helps!

Hi -
My apologies.. when I mentioned deleting the profile, I did delete the sid from the registery. However, I did notice when I attempted to follow Method 3.. there were two profiles in there listed as "unknown" and I was unable to delete them. Pretty strange.
Now that the profile was removed from the registery and I've tried other logins that work successfully everywhere else except on these two windows 7 laptop PCs, is there anything else?? The only login that works is "administrator to the domain."
Please advise.
Thank you,
Peggy -

So the entire profile from C:\Users has been deleted along with the SID registry key?
No domain user account can log onto these laptops, or just certain domain users? You are positive there are no GPO's, or even a local policy setting, that is set to not allow anyone to log on, unless they are in the admin group?
-
jueves, 14 de junio de 2012 14:08
Yes.
The only domain user account and local account that can log in is the administrator account. I created an account duplicating the administrator account and it still didn't work.
I checked the GPOs on the server as well as the local computer and they are not configured. I freshly installed both operating systems as well.
At my other client I have Windows 7 workstations and they work fine, I never had this issue. This issue is happening on Toshiba laptops, is that anything? I wouldn't think so but I don't know what else it could be.
Please help, I feel very helpless. :(

We are trying our best to help you out. Really sounds weird that even after, reinstalling Windows that only admins can log onto the machine. That would tell me, a policy is in place that is not allowing to log on locally. So log on as an admin, click start and in the search box type RSOP.msc, once it gives you the results please verify that the following is NOT set
Computer configuration --> Windows Settings --> Security Settings --> Local Policies --> User Rights Assignments --> Allow log on locally
By default this setting should have administrators and everyone
Also check that deny log on locally is NOT defined

> The only domain user account and local account that can log in is the administrator account.
Do you mean local Administrator account or domain Administrator account?> I freshly installed both operating systems as well.
If you have reinstall OS on this laptop, the issue still exist, that’s really odd. What I thought to troubleshoot this issue:
Log on to this computer, disjoin the computer from domain.
Create new local account, and check whether you can logon locally with the new local account.
Remove computer object form AD.
Reset computer SID through execute sysprep.
Join the computer to domain, move computer object to domain root to let it apply as few policies.
Restart the computer and check the result.
Hope this helps!

Hi - I apologize for not getting back to you sooner, had to go onto other projects. I am back with this laptop now and I just ran the "rsop.msc" and checked out "allow log on locally" and it states that it is not defined. However, there are red x's next to "admin on vita1" (user that I am logged in as and computer name).
-
martes, 19 de junio de 2012 15:39Also, there is no setting that states "everyone and administrators".. It won't let me define any policies...
-
martes, 19 de junio de 2012 15:46
If I logon as either the Administrator of the PC and/or the domain, it will allow me in.
This originally had Windows 7 Home version and I booted and reformatted with W7 Professional but I noticed that it still keeps an old copy of Windows, it renames it "Windows.old".. could this be effecting it?
I am not at that office to disjoin from the domain right now. Unfortunately, I won't be there until Friday. I will try those things that you listed then. Should I just try to disjoin it now and login locally? I think it will allow me to do it without the domain being present, right? If there is anything else that you can think of, please let me know.
Thank you.
-
miércoles, 20 de junio de 2012 12:51You can take it off the domain without the domain being present, but then you leave an orphaned computer object in AD. Usually when I reinstall windows, I always delete and recreate the partition before doing an install, so I know everything will be fresh, if you have a windows.old then it sounds like you did an upgrade rather then a fresh install, will this affect things, I don't think so.
-
miércoles, 20 de junio de 2012 14:37
When I set out to do a fresh install, I boot with the W7 dvd, delete the partition then installed windows on it. Should I use another utility to wipe it clean? With WXP, I always used the WXP cd and it always worked.
If doing a fresh install will not fix this issue then what else can it be?? Should I now wait to add it back to the domain? I can't login to it now locally without the domain as any other user but admin. Also, when I ran the rsop.msc and looked at the properties of the "allow locally".. there was nothing under the security tab. Should there have been "everyone" and "admin"?? It also wasn't giving me the option to add any users.
-
miércoles, 20 de junio de 2012 16:31
Nope I boot to the Win7 cd also, when I get to the disk part of it, I select i think it's more options, that way I can delete the partition, and then create a new one, then install the OS.
Did you run the RSOP.msc when it was on the domain or off the domain? You can't change the settings within RSOP.msc, that is just giving you the resultant set of the GPO's applied to the machine, to make changes you would have to change the GPO on the domain, or the local policy of the machine.
Seeing the machine is off the domain now, you should only be able to log in as local admin, or any local accounts created on the machine. I would like the machine to be on the domain, and plugged into the network, then re-run the rsop.msc to check those settings, it will also tell you what GPO is setting the particular setting. By default it should be set to Not Defined, if it set to enabled, then we need to look at what groups are allowed to log on.
-
miércoles, 20 de junio de 2012 17:34
That is what I do too, when I get to the disk part, I select more options or something to delete the partition.
No, I didn't run the rsop.msc when it was on the domain. I ran it when I was out of the office but it was still part of the domain and then I ran it when I removed it.
I will let you know the results once I join it to the domain again.

I am currently at the site now and I deleted from AD then joined it back to the domain and it still wouldnt let me log in. I then logged in as the administrator and ran ROSP.msc. It was all undefined.
Is there anything else I should look at or try?

what is the type of your users profile? Roaming?
I noticed you reinstalled the computer, can you log on before you join the computer to domain?
is there any error in the event log? system and application.

No, it is not a roaming profile.
I joined it back to the domain and no, I wasn't able to login when I wasn't joined to the domain either. I did find the "Application" log.. an Event ID 1509,1511,1530. I didn't see anything in the "System" log.

it is weird. users cannot log on to the computer even you re-install the OS and do not join to domain.
how do you install the computer? a fresh install from installation media (DVD-ROM) or restore from a image?
in addition, please paste the event you received, I would like to know the detail message of the event. thanks.

No, I installed the OS a while back ago.. then joined to the domain and it worked fine until I upgraded the server to W2008. Then I went through the steps of deleting the profile from the registry, then the rest is history.. I then disjoined it from the domain and tried to login locally (I created a local user) and still couldn't, same message.
I feel like wiping it clean and installing the OS on it again. I will get you the details from the event logs.
Thanks!

if you have opportunity, you can
But I preffer resolving problem.
Try one more thing before you reformat machine:
Rename this profile, and try to log on again. This should start creation of profile.
If this will be successfull, copy one by one profile from old profile, restarting after each copying. Maybe you find what causes this error.

I would rather not have to reformat it and start over.
I did rename the profile and it still didn't work, I even created new users and they didn't work either. It seems to only like the "admin" login for local and the "administrator" login when I am on the domain. When I noticed that, I put the user profiles that weren't working in the administrator group thinking maybe this would help but that didn't work either.
I haven't tried removing the SID.. would you recommend this? Also, should I use sysprep or is there another tool that will remove it faster?

Lengthy and interesting discussion...
It's already clear that, almost all possible suggestions have been tried but in vain:>
One more suggestion from my end.
Instead of reformatting the machine in question, try in-place upgrade, in-place upgrade would likely to fix any OS related issues.
How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 & Windows Server 2008 R2
