I have a server 64gb ram with 1tb sas disks and 2 six cores . the idea is to install:
. Windows 2008 datacenter with the rol of the database SQL Server 2008 r2 standard and hyper-v.
. Virtualize the role of appl (1700 external users will use a document management application (http://applserver
. Virtualize the role of terminal server , 38 users connected
. Virtualize the role of File server (45 internal users)
. Virtualize the role of CAT server
. Virtualize Print Server
what would it be the best configuration? would i need a SAN? what if i want coninuity? what would it be the best conf for appl and sql virtualized servers?

Hi,
First of all, it is not recommended that you install other applications on Hyper-V host machine.
By the way, the scenario is actually depends on your plan and requirements. You can install the SQL Server 2008 R2 with a virtual machine.

Hi,
I very much agree with Vincent Hu: don't install SQL in the host partition. Run it within a VM.
With the information you provided, you don't need a SAN. SAN's and Hyper-V are usually the option when you want to setup clusters/HA. 1 TB SAS disks may or may not be enough depending on you needs but if you do need more storage and will use a single host server you will most likely find directly attached storage, DAS (there are many options here) to be cheaper and providing very good performance. In terms of the different roles/VMs that should be fine, a decent guess would be that the SQL VM and the terminal server (RDS?) VM will need most resources from the host.
Le us know more details if you want more specific answers.

Yeah we need more info - you mention continuity... what are your business continuity requirements? What if the whole server dies?
There are lots of options for availability (e.g. one scenario, you could get another similarly speced box, run a VM containing SQL on each. Or you could get a SAN and use failover clustering of Hyper-V).

Hello,
I'd agree with Vincent. You certainly do not want other roles co-located with Hyper-V. Even in the case of domain controllers and file servers, it is better to virtualize than incur the cost with the customer.
