default retention policy/recover deleted items

    Frage

  • i never specified a retention policy when i installed exchange 2010.   There is a default one under organization, mailbox etc but no mailboxes are added to the default policy.  however, i noticed that the recover deleted items is enabled on the mailboxes (which is probably a good thing).  but i'm curious where the recover deleted items policy is set if the retention policy is not really specified?   or is recover deleted items the same thing as a retention policy?

  • Once Exchange is installed there's always Default Archive and Retention Policy  that apllies to all mailboxes unless some other policy is specified. There are several policy tags with action "Delete and Allow Recovery" assigned to the Default Archive and Retention Policy.

  • In Exchange 2010 SP1, Exchange Setup creates the retention policy Default Archive and Retention Policy.

When you enable a personal archive for a mailbox, the Default Archive and Retention Policy is automatically applied to the mailbox if it doesn't already have a retention policy.

If you later apply a retention policy to the mailbox, tags from the Default Archive and Retention Policy are no longer available to the mailbox. Existing items that have tags from the Default Archive and Retention Policy applied are still processed and moved to the archive or deleted based on the tag.

Note: Default Archive and Retention Policy is not automatically applied to all the mailboxes until and unless we enable personal archive for a mailbox
