Envelope Notification icon

    Question

  • I previously had Outlook 2007 installed on XP. When I got a new email, the envelope notification icon would stay in the systray until the message was read.

I have now moved to Windows 7 and the icon only stays for about 30 seconds.

Is there any way to get the former behaviour and have the icon remain? In both cases the email is downloaded from an exchange server to a pst file

  • In the Notification Area, click on Show hidden icons.
    Click Customize.
Microsoft Office Outlook (You have new unopened items.)
    Select Show icon and notification

  • Tried it and it didn't work. The notification still disappears after 30 seconds

  • Strange. Works here: Office 2007 SP2 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Perhaps you should check your settings.

  • Well. I checked all the settings I could think of before posting here.  Office 2007 SP2 on Windows 7 Enterprise x86.

Maybe someone else will have other suggestions

  • Here is what the help text says:

You can customize how icons and their corresponding notifications behave in the taskbar.

    * Go to the Windows website to watch the video. (1:48)
    * Right-click an empty area on the taskbar, and then click Properties.
    * Under Notification area, click Customize.
    * For each icon, select one of the following options in the list:
    * Show icon and notifications. The icon always remains visible on the taskbar in the notification area and any notifications are displayed.
    * Hide icon and notifications. The icon is hidden and notifications aren't displayed.
    * Only show notifications. The icon is hidden, but if the program triggers a notification balloon, it's displayed on the taskbar.
    * Click OK.

[For Outlook is should be Show icons and notifications]

Just tested it on my Mac with VMware Fusion and Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit ... it just works.

  • I've read the help files before but I read them again and watched the video.

Just tested again....it just doesn't work. I guess I'll have to live with it or go back to XP

  • New mail envelop does appear in the system tray, as it used to, but only for the hotmail account.  We need to have it displayed for all IMAP accounts as well.  This is what some many people want.  Microsoft should listen to its users.

Bring back new mail envelope in the system tray for all accounts, including non-Microsoft IMAP accounts.

  • I have created a plugin that displays an icon even for IMAP accounts.

  • Impressing! Then it shows that you and I am right. There are ways to display the envelope notification icon in the System Tray (or Notification Area) in Windows 7.
