Is it possible to recover pop3 emails that have been downloaded from exchange server 2007

    Question

  • We have a pop3 email client who just lost their hard drive (dead). Is there a way to recover the emails they received before? I know pop3 emails gets downloaded to the client pst file and gets deleted from the exchange server, but is there some sort of a record that can be recovered from the server? Are these pop3 emails not backed up somewhere in the server? We need to get something back even if it's just a log of the emails received, containing the sender, so they can at least recreate their information from there. Having sending client email addresses recovered is a start. Thanks.

  • What is your deleted item retention set to for your server? How many days?

When a pop3 client downloads messages they are hard-deleted from the mailbox.

Using Outlook, if you look in the Dumpster under the INBOX, you should be able to recover items within the deleted item period.

How to Recover a Deleted Item

To recover deleted items from any folder with Outlook (This is enabled by default in Outlook 2007)

    1. If the DumpsterAlwaysOn registry key has not been set, set it before proceeding by following the steps outlined in "To use the DumpsterAlwaysOn registry key to recover hard-deleted items" earlier in this topic. If the DumpsterAlwaysOn registry key has been set, proceed to Step 2.

    2. Open an Outlook client that has access to the mailbox that has deleted items.

    3. Select the folder that has deleted items in it.

    4. From the Tools menu, select Recover Deleted Items.

    5. Select the items that you want to recover, and then click Recover Selected Items.

  • Hello,

In addition to AndyD’s comment, Recover Deleted Items is only available in Exchange account. POP3 account does not have this feature.

The messages that send to POP3 account are deleted by default from the exchange server after they are downloaded to your computer.

If you are using Outlook, you can leave the email in server by selecting the ""Leaving e-mail messages " setting in Outlook. To prevent the problem happens again, I recommend you select this setting.

Leaving e-mail messages on the server
