Exchange 2003 to 2010 Migration error - mailboxes stuck/not completing/Stalled

    Question

  • Guys...

I am migrating mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 (SP1)

Used the 'New local move request' to make this happen. Had migrated around 20 out of 50 mailboxes and now have issues.

4 of the mailboxes got 'stuck' in the 'move request' window with a status of 99% - completing. And that was it...never moved further.

Figured I would remove one (after a long wait) and retry...and now I see errors (on source box) of...

User [username] failed to log on because their mailbox is in the process of being moved.

I am reluctant to retry the others which are still stuck @ 99%

A post here: http://www.office-outlook.com/outlook-forum/index.php/m/665061/ describes very well my situation, but we're at SP1 and there is no roll up update to apply.

    Any advice...???

    Thanks

PS...I should add I can initiate a new move request on another mailbox...though i cancelled immediately for fear of rendering inaccessable another account. So, it would appear that communications between the two servers are in good shape...it's just the finalisation of these particular account (or removal of flags that suggests the mailbox is on one server vs the other)

I did two things (simultaneously) here to understand more about what might have gone wrong...

    1. Cloned a user/mailbox on source server with a view to migrating it, and seeing if a virtually empty mailbox would go thru
    2. Ran best practises analyser from the destination server (2010)

While i was waiting for the time to tick by, I refreshed the local move window, and my two pending/completing moves had completed (after 14 hours of dormancy). And, my restarted move that had sat on 0% for 4 hours also started moving.

So...I cannot answer what might have caused this, nor what might have woken it up. If an explanation presents itself, i'll share. BTW...the end of the ultimately successful moves (that slept for 14 hours) read...

(the move had reached 99% at about 8am)

5/02/2011 12:48:25 PM [SERVERNAME] The Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Replication service 'SERVERNAME.DOMAIN.local' (14.1.218.11 caps:07) is examining the request.

  • Good Troiubleshooting... So you are telling that cleaned mailbox account is moving correctly ?.. Is this is the case its more looking some courrepted mail item causing the issue.

  • Hi

When a move request reaches a status of Completed or Completed with warning, you must clear the move request to remove the InTransit flag from the mailbox. You won't be able to move the mailbox again until you clear the previous move request.

Please have a look of below KB for troubleshooting move request and clear old move request.

    http://www.howexchangeworks.com/2010/01/cant-move-mailbox-in-exchange-2010.html

...the move request was removed from the queue. I was getting a 'MapiExceptionLogonFailed: Unable to open message store' message on the 2010 box. I didn't get all the error messages but there was also one that said it was marked as being moved.

I now find (having walked away for 4 hours, that I CAN now create a new request on this user...but it's currently sat at 0% unable to proceed further. Looking at the properties of the move, it connected to the source mailbox, and has done nothing for 25 minutes.

The other two mailboxes that have been sat 'completing' for > 6 hours (and @ 99%) were getting errors on the source server of "User [username] failed to log on because their mailbox is in the process of being moved. " Looking at their logs, they got to the section where it did...

5/02/2011 7:31:06 AM Mailbox was updated using domain controller
5/02/2011 7:31:06 AM Mailbox data after finalization:

...and then a bunch of data...where as others, straight away went into the section that says...

"Move has completed and final clean up has started."

There are no longer any errors being generated. It's as though everything completed successfully, except that last step where it (according to mailboxes that moved successfully)...

    1. resets target mailbox
    2. seed MBI cache of target mailbox
    3. source mailbox cleaned up

And it was all going so well. BTW...stalled mailboxes are sub 1GB in size...around 8-900 MB.

  • Sorry for the slow follow ups.

The 2003 Exchange box had gotten stuck on something...the exchange message store wouldn't restart. A reboot of the device and were were good once more. At this stage, I do not know if it was too much load migrating more than one mailbox @ a time...or if it was the finding corrupt mailbox items inside the mailbox.

Either way, hope it doesn't re-emerge.

  • I forced replication on all of the DC's in our environment and it seemed to resolve the issue.
