Outlook 2010 - Folders missing from folder view but visible in Folder Sizes screen

    Question

  • Weird problem here. About 2 months ago, a folder I had under the Inbox all of a sudden just disappeared. This missing folder also had 6-7 subfolders within it that also went missing. Just earlier, I decided to check my mailbox size and somehow, the folders I thought I had lost are all appearing in the folder sizes listings, along with the size of the data within them. All of the folders listed in the screenshot below, including the ones blanked out, are missing from Outlook.

I'm been using Outlook 2010 connecting with OA to Exchange 2007. Autoarchive is turned disabled, and I do not use any PSTs. I have checked and rechecked all folders to see if the missing folders were inadvertently moved anywhere else but I cannot find them anywhere.

    Any ideas or suggestions?

EDIT: The folders are NOT showing up in OWA or on another machine that also is running Outlook 2010 for this same account.

  • Sweet, just figured it out. Seems to be a fairly common bug that hides Outlook folder. I downloaded MFCMapi and edited one of the attributes to make it visible again. Instructions below for any other users that may have this problem...

  • Might be worth running SCANOST on this one (possibly the first time in history that I've recommended that utility).

See if this helps: http://www.officeforlawyers.com/outlook/tsol.htm#scanpst (the instructions are basically the same for SCANOST)

  • Ben, thanks for the suggestion. It seems though that they have dropped SCANOST from Outlook 2010 and instead recommend that we use the Clear Offline Items option in folder properties. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179110%28office.14%29.aspx#BKMK_WhatsRemoved I did try this option but still fail to see my missing folders. Dang...

  • I setup the account on an Outlook 2007 client and ran SCANOST against it. SCANOST does see the missing folders in the folder tree, but finds no errors when it scans them. When I open up my mailbox again, the folders are still missing.

  • I'm using Oultook 2010.  I tried the solutions above to no avail and then resolved my missing folder problem by going to Folder>IMAP Folder and then subscribing to the missing folders (look under "All", not "Subscribed".  They immediately appeared as subfolders in my inbox and within minutes were populated with the stored emails.  I created the folders in Outlook Webmail and suspect that is why they didn't immediately appear in my company Outlook 2010 inbox.  Hope this helps someone.

  • I ran into the same problem with one of my users.  I closed and restarted Outlook and the folder came back onto the list.  This is a system folder so the Delete Folder option is not available.  I don't know why it disappeared from the list.
