Error in establishing SMTP connection, Error: 504 5.7.4 Unrecognized authentication type

    Question

  • Hi

We have a 3rd party product that sends SMTP commands to the mail server.  We are currently migrating from Exchange 2003 to 2010.

The product works fine with 2003, but sending the same information to 2010, produces "Error in establishing SMTP connection, Error: 504 5.7.4 Unrecognized authentication type".  This is followed by  "Error: 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay"

Our IT people are at a loss and as I am not an exchange specialist (just a humble accountant actually) I was wondering if anyone had come across a solution that doesn't involve setting the exchange server to allow relaying?

    Thanks

  • That may seem like the obvious answer here, as it is what Anil stated as well, but if the emails are destined for internal exchange recipients this is not necessary or advised.  This type of dedicated connector is only required when an appliance needs to use Exchange to send to the internet.
