Event ID 4004 / 4015 on Server 2003

    Question

  • Hi there,

I'm not sure if this forum is strictly for Server 2007 or above. If so, maybe someone could direct me to a forum that discusses Server 2003. Our SBS 2003 server received the following DNS error (event ID 4015):

The DNS server has encountered a critical error from the Active Directory. Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly. The extended error debug information (which may be empty) is "". The event data contains the error.

This was followed by additions event ID 4004 errors:

The DNS server was unable to complete directory service enumeration of zone ..  This DNS server is configured to use information obtained from Active Directory for this zone and is unable to load the zone without it.  Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly and repeat enumeration of the zone. The extended error debug information (which may be empty) is "". The event data contains the error.

Originally, I thought this was related to an auto-update that occurred over the evening, but this happened before any autoupdate even took place. When I got into work this morning, our server had been down all weekend, and at the login screen, it said a driver failed to start. I restarted the server and everything booted up OK. I'm just trying to figure out what may have caused this, and how to prevent it in the future. I do know that hours before this error happened, I noticed there were a SQL server update pack 4, which hasn't been able to install for the past several months. I set Windows update to ignore the update, and it proceded to install Internet Explorer 8. I don't know if IE8 is to blame or what...

    Can someone offer any pointers?

Thanks a ton for your time...
