smtp;554 5.7.1:Relay access denied

    Question

  • Has anyone rcvd this type of message?

    We use:-

    O2k3 SP3 client side

    E2K3 ent SP2 server side

    The full bounce message reads:-

       <clientemailaddress> on 01/04/2008 09:29
You do not have permission to send to this recipient.  For assistance, contact your system administrator.
                <exchange_server_name> #5.7.1 smtp;554 5.7.1 <clientemailaddress>: Relay access denied>

Naturally our end user thinks it is a problem at our end, and hey they maybe right, but any pointers to why and how to fix (if the problem is at our end) would be appreciated.

    Regards

    Nick

    Hi Nick,

Please let me know whether the following KB is helpful to troubleshoot the issue.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895853/en-us

If no luck, please let me know whether it is only one user or a few users getting the NDR (Relay Access Denied). Whether the issue occurs when sending to a specific recipient. What type of clients are used e.g. Outlook 2000, OWA.

    Thanks

Thanks for that, I don't want to think I'm ignoreing your post but I've been out of the office for a couple of days and now I need to digest/test the KB article.

BTW we use O2k3 clients with SP3 applied and OWA.

I've not had it reported from other users but thats not say it is not happening.

There is a few pointers in that document which I need to wade through so I'll reply when I've done that.

    Thanks

    Nick

  • 90% of the time this type of message comes from the system receiving the email.  Your email is being filtered by them not you and therefore being returned with this message as Relay access denied.  You will need to contact them and find out what or why they are filtering your emails.  It could be your attachment (if any) or some character string that thier filter recognizes as a bad email.
