How does Exchange 2010 deal with white space?

    Question

  • Hi,

Can anyone point me to a Microsoft article that explains how Exchange 2010 white space is reused and when it is reused. I have seen a few references that say white space will be used before a mailbox store consumes more disk space so where is that information coming from?

    Thanks,

    Phil

  • That is the way that Exchange has always worked.
Content is deleted, the content is then marked as white space once the deleted item retention window has been exceeded, the white space is then reused.
Exchange 2010 is more efficient at doing it because it doesn't run a nightly clean up of the database, but is constantly doing it in the background by default.

Although looking through Technet I can't find a reference to that behaviour explicitly.

    Simon.
