Issue with iPhone 5 and Exchange 2010 - Extremely high Verizon network data usage

    Question

  • I am working with a user who has a couple months of Verizon bills in which they were charged for 15GB to 20GB of data. Once they removed the Exchange server sync via ActiveSync, the data went back to normal rates, 40MB over 5 days.

    Microsoft Exchange 2010 - Version 14.3.123.3

    Apple iPhone 5 - Version 6.1.4 (10B350)

    Verizon Wireless network

What could be causing this, this is only happened with a single user out of ~50 or so using iPhones and no other phones have this issue either?

    Thanks

  • Iphones are notorious for doing this.

Consider recreating the partnership on the phone and also setting the Exchange "Fetch New Data" to Manual ( disabling push) and asking the user to manually check for new messages on the phone.

There are also some ActiveSync updates on the Exchange side in 2010 SP3 RU1, but test before updating your servers.

  • You might be suffering from the Calendar synch issue, where a particular appointment is continually attempted to be resynched by the phone. You might be able to tell if this is happening by having a quick look in the recoverable deleted items for the user, where you might see thousands of deleted sync messages with the appointment subject as the subject line. If you see this, try deleting the bad appointment and then recreating the phone's calendar by turning it off and back on in the account settings under Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
