Exchange 2010 services

    Question

  • I have installed Exchange 2010 with SP1 on a VM in ESXi 5.0 Host, now when the server tries to start the Exchange Trnasport server it stays in "starting" moce and the Exchange Service Host will not start (times out on starting). I have applied all the updates for Server 2008 R2 and Exchange 2010 but still have the same problem.

Does the fact that the system identifies the processor as $RoleProductPlatform = 'amd64' but this is an Intel 7560 chip machine have anything to do with this?

Tried to setup again and wanted to post the results

  • amd64 means only x64. Your Intel chip is certainly not the cause. The most likely reason is that you have disabled IPv6. Either enable IPv6. Or if you want to disable IPv6 for any reasons, you have to use Registry Editor to completely disable IPv6.

    I would opt for enabling.

Service 'MSExchangeTransport' failed to reach status 'Running' on this server.

  • IPv6 is enabled and IPCONFIG show that it has an address, plus it has and IPv6 address in DNS as well.

What does it say? Check the SACL right, it should be 1 and not 0

  • Yes, it is an Information message

    In-site:

    DCDT01.domain CDG 1 7 7 1 0 0 1 7 1

    dcdt02.domain CDG 1 7 7 1 0 0 1 7 1

I changed our domain to the word domain

As I read the codes the second 0 is the SALC right

I also have an error of 2114 (DSC_E_NO_Suitable_CDC, LDAP error) and an 2604

  • 1st 0 is the SACL -

This is most likely your issue. Exch cant read info from the directory

    Run the ExchBPA.

    And see this - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919089

  • I applied the ASDIEdit changes described below

    Go to ADSIEdit.msc

    Domain -> Domain Controller OU

Right click on Domain Controller OU and select Properties.

Security tab and select Advanced .

Permissions tab, click on Add Exchange Servers security group, click on OK

Select Properties. Find Read nTSecurityDescriptor Check Mark on Allow

    Click OK until everything closed.

But everyting is the same, does it take some time for this to propergate? I still received the 2114, 2604 and 2080 with the same values.

  • You may have to wait for replication.

Also Try to restart the ad topology servcie and check 2080 again.

    Wasn;t that set before?

Yes, the 2nd 0 is the SACL bit. Dumb Question. I assume you domain-prepped all or the domain(s) already at some point, but these issues seem to indicate that it wasnt completely successful or needs to be re-run

It should, ( thats why it was kinda dumb question on my part  :P )

but wouldnt hurt to re-run as you just did. It will go through and apply the necessary perms.

You can check the setup log as well to verify it ran correctly again as well.

One of the documents I have is stating that I should run the setup /domainprep command but I cannot find that in the setup /? list of commands. How do I run the setup /domainprep command?

  • Make sure that the network admin account has the right permission

Also check the Manage Auditing and Security Log right on the local server's policy and make sure the account youre using has got right set for this.

  • Try Starting the transport service manually after the service is up rerun the setup it should pickup from where it left off. Normally service will be started after setup is done with the role.

  • The Network administrator account has the rights to the full local machine

the Server is identified in the Exchange Servers and that is identified in the Manage Auditing and Security Log and that is showing when i use GPEDit on the local machine.

I have decied to go one step farther than the last time. I will start with a new machine, then exchange 2010 I want to make sure I have a network that usderstands the SID and account in the network correctly (Remote Connection was giving me notification that the certificate was not valid).

I will let you know how it turns out.

THe account should be a member of the Organization Management group. ALso, when running the setup program, run as an Elevated permissions. (i.e. "Run as Administrator). THis is very important.

  • used Run as administrator, same results same error same condition the Server is identified in Exchange Servers GPedit see that Exchange Server is in the Manage Auditing and Security Log group. all of the pre setup (id the exchange 2003 server) is accecped, but when it comes to installing any of the exchange services it fails with the SeSecurityPrivilige

Also the network administrator has the Organizational Management group rights

  • Any progress on this -

    Verify the below

    1. Open the Default Domain Controllers Security Settings snap-in on the domain controller specified in the event description.
In the console tree, under, Security Settings, expand Local Policies, and then click
      User Rights Assignments.

In the results pane, double-click, Manage auditing and security log. Verify that both the Exchange Servers group and the
Exchange Enterprise Servers group are listed.

Make sure that the Exchange server is still a member of the
Exchange Domain Servers group. Also, make sure that the
Exchange Domain Servers group is a member of Exchange Enterprise Servers group.

Make sure that the group permissions are inherited by the Microsoft Exchange computer account

  • I was researching the logs and found that Exchange 2010 setup could not find the Server name (in this case SCMail) in AD. So I decided to try another approach and removed the server from the domain and when re-attaching it to the domain i changed its name. Tried to set up Exchange 2010 and did not get the same error.

Now that is not to say that everything is OK as I was back to the same problem of the Hub Trnasport Service starting, it is still stuck in the STARTING mode.

  • has the setup completed? or part way through the setup?

You may have to kill the service and start it, depending where you are in the setup process, check the exchangesetup.log for this.

  • The install fails when it cannot start the HUB Transport service. All of the other services are set up and the only one running (started) is the Active Directory exchange service.

when you mean the install fails, at what exact point?

  • When the Hub Trnasport server fails to START at that point it identifies the failure (failed to start is all it states) and then the only path remaining is to click FINISH

  • In our domain (2008 level) I cannot find the Exchange Enterprose Server group.

But when I tried to add it to the Manage Audiging and Security Log AD found it, so I added it.

  • Will try again, last night I attempted to install only the Mail Role and Client Access but they failed due to the Exchange Service Host service not starting.

I applied some additional Exchange updates and will try the install again this morning.
