DCA - Internet Connection is not available...

    Question

  • hi folx,

in my hyper-v-uag-directaccess-testlab i configured DCA to check on my DA-Clients if DA is working fine. on my simulated internet i got the information "internet connectivity is not available". can anyone tell me what the DCA is looking for? a standard-gate? a root-dns? bing.com?

btw. my directaccess is working fine!

    ;-)

  • DCA takes this indication from windows network list manager. If you have the no internet connectivity indication in windows (network and sharing center), then DCA will say the same.

Windows tries to determine internet connectivity by accessing www.msftncsi.com/ncsi.txt and by resolving dns.msftncsi.com to an IP address.

I'm not sure exactly of the relation between those checks (whether 1 successful check is enough or not)

  • Hi,

You need to create a vm in your virtual fake public network.
    This virtual machine need IIS.
Create a virtual web site "www.msftncsi.com" with a file ncsi.txt
containing "Microsoft NCSI" only. The site must be in anonymous access.

In your DNS infrastructure, you have to create a zone "msftncsi.com"
and add this record on your DNS
    dns.msftncsi.com A 131.107.255.255
    www.msftncsi.com A x.x.x.x (where x.x.x.x is the @ip of the web server
    NCSI).

When the changes will be done, on the UAG server type the following
command "net stop nlasvc /y & net start netprofm"

    Have a nice day,

  • hello yaniv,

ah thats a good hint! network and sharing center says that i don't have an internet connection (shure - it's all simulated in hyper-v and i don't have a vm with the whole internet ;-))

resolving to dns.msftncsi.com and www.msftncsi.com/ncsi.txt sadly don't change this status. o.k. - now i need to find out how i can "simulate the internet" to tell windows network list manager that he is "on".

still got no yellow exclamation mark, but that's not enough (http://blogs.technet.com/b/michw/archive/2009/08/31/network-location-status-indicator.aspx)

  • Hey guys,

Speaking of NSCI - if you deploy the UAG Test Labs, using the UAG Test Lab Guides at:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/test-lab-guides.aspx

In the Base Configuration Guide (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=ab6c61af-9c34-4692-815c-4396b482d31b) we provide instructions on how to create a simulated Internet where the NCSI will show as Internet Connected when the DA client is off the Corpnet network.
