Installation problem after removing Symantec Mail Security

    Question

  • Hi,

    I am trying to install Microsoft Forefront Security for Exchange Server on an Exhcange 2007 server running on Windows Server 2003.

    When I first installed the server I tried to install Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange but the .mmc refused to work with mmc v3 so i uninstalled it.

    Now I am getting an error saying "Setup detected that a VSAPI based antivirus product is already installed. Forefront Server Security can't co-exist with any VSAPI based antivirus product." and the installation will not continue.

    In vain I deleted every mentioning of Symsntec or SMSME in the registry and on the hard drive, but the message kips coming back.

    Any suggestions?

  • Please try the following:

       When installing an AV solution using the VSAPI2, a registry key
        is created to save information concerning the VSAPI library. If
        this key is present when you attempt to install Microsoft Forefront
        Security for Exchange Server, the installation will fail.  You will
        need to delete the key before attempting to reinstall Forefront
        Security for Exchange Server.

        The registry key you will need to delete is:

        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->System->CurrentControlSet->Services->
        MSExchangeIS->VirusScan

        Delete the entire VirusScan key.

        Additionally, VSAPI will not allow you to run multiple AV software
        solutions concurrently.
