Problem accessing Microsoft Forefront Client Security Console on Server 2003

    Question

  • When I attempt to open the Client Security Console, I get an window stating "Windows is searching for fcs.msc.  To locate file yourself, click Browse."  Where can I find this file or is there a bigger issue?  Forefront is still on the client machines, however, I cannot access the console to manage the application.  Please help.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your post.

Please perform steps below to troubleshooting:
1.If your fcs just lost fcs.msc file
On one temp computer, run FCSCD\server\FCSMS.MSI file, ignore any prompt, it will extract fcs.msc to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Forefront\Client Security\Server folder.
2.If your fcs management server does not work when you recover the fcs.msc file
Backup your fcs server first, remove FCS management server registry folder
HKCR\Installer\Products\43B65BBE628ABD11C838001134C0374A which Product Name value is Microsoft Forefront Client Management Server,
then run FCSCD server install wizard to reinstall FCS Management Server
3.If step 2 does not work, please refer blog article below to reinstall FCS and MOM server (Backup your fcs server first)
Changing the management group to which an FCS client reports

If there are more inquiries on this issue, please feel free to let us know.

  • That error appears on the FCS server or for an FCS console on a remote workstation ?

  • Hi Ted,

The file should be located here: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Forefront\Client Security\Server\fcs.msc".

  • Could not find that file name or icon in the folder.  Is there somewhere to download it from or a help desk to call or instant message with?
