  • Ah, thank you Christian for pointing me to that log file. I'd missed it.

    What I find there is:

Tue Feb 14 07:05:00 2012 (17020- 4012), "INFORMATION: Attempting to download the Kaspersky5 scan engine package from http://forefrontdl.microsoft.com/server/scanengineupdate/x86/Kaspersky5."
Tue Feb 14 07:18:55 2012 (17020- 4012), "INFORMATION: The Kaspersky5 scan engine has been downloaded"
Tue Feb 14 07:20:53 2012 (17020- 4012), "INFORMATION: The Kaspersky5 scan engine has been staged."
    Tue Feb 14 07:20:53 2012 (12152- 8932), "INFORMATION: Testing the Kaspersky5 scan engine."
Tue Feb 14 07:21:21 2012 (12152- 8932), "ERROR: Unable to load the Kaspersky5 scan engine. hr = 0x800C0102.  An error occurred while loading the Kaspersky5 scan engine."
Tue Feb 14 07:21:21 2012 (17020- 4012), "ERROR: (0x00000715) The specified resource type cannot be found in the image file.  The Kaspersky5 scan engine test failed. hr = 0x80004005"
Tue Feb 14 07:21:30 2012 (17020- 4012), "INFORMATION: The Kaspersky5 scan engine has been rolled back."

And googling "The Kaspersky5 scan engine test failed. hr = 0x80004005" allowed me to find:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/Antigen/thread/7d9247e2-56af-42b3-9382-43e38b54bf84
which clued me in that there is /also/ a Kaspersky folder in the hidden C:\ProgramData folder:
    C:\ProgramData\Kaspersky SDK
And renaming that folder allowed the update to complete! Would never have found that without you, Christian, much thanks.

I've updated my little "list of 2K8 problems" that I keep at:
    http://techref.massmind.org/Techref/os/win/2008sbs.htm
to include that hidden folder so I won't forget this next time.
