3rd party update catalog issue

Hi,
I have set up a SCE2010 server in our environment and it works fine, except third party updates - from Dell and Adobe.
I can import the catalogs, download the updates, approve the updates for the specified groups, but then the updates stays in "In progress" status. Windows updates and software deployments work fine, only theese 3rd party updates doesn't work. It looks like the PC's don't see them. I have tried to analyze the windows update log, but I don't see any errors. Is there some special setting for flash/reader etc to push such updates?
Thank you

Hello Honza,
I have test this function in my environment but found no problem. The updates from Adobe can be installed properly on the managed computers. Is there any change of the status on your SCE server? It may take several hours to deploy the updates.
As far as I know, there's no special setting for the third-party updates.
For your information, the following Technical Information Sheet from Dell may be helpful in your scenario:

Hello Yog,
thank you for your response. As I said, I can install the Adobe updates f.e. via software deployment, but not via the update catalog. Thanks for the Dell Sheet.
The computers show up as managed. As soon as I approve the update it changes into the "In progress" status and stays in it forever. I have tried to un/install the agent, re-approve the updates, wuauclt /detectnow etc, but it shows only windows updates, not the dell/adobe ones. The status also doesn't change after few days...
The weird thing for me is, that I cannot find any error in any log.
thank you

Hi,
this could be due to updates being too large and not completed downloading when they were set to approved. We need to verify this.
Please share below files:
%PROGRAMFILES%\Update Services\Logfiles\SoftwareDistribution.log
%Windir%\WindowsUpdate.log
You can send email to blrforum at microsoft .com once you are ready with the data. In case the logs are too large, I'll send a workspace info where you can upload files

Hi,
As per windowsupdate.log:
2011-06-21 09:01:35:982 15120 3ddc COMAPI >>-- RESUMED -- COMAPI: Search [ClientId = <NULL>]
2011-06-21 09:01:35:983 15120 3ddc COMAPI - Updates found = 0
2011-06-21 09:01:35:983 15120 3ddc COMAPI - Reboot required
2011-06-21 09:01:35:983 15120 3ddc COMAPI ---------
2011-06-21 09:01:35:983 15120 3ddc COMAPI -- END -- COMAPI: Search [ClientId = <NULL>]This means it needs a restart and client is not going to take any detection until its rebooted.

Honza,
I am checking the softwaredistribution.log file and as far as I can tell, there are no problems there as it looks like there are several successful deployment of updates (here is just a small portion of the logs where I see it)

Per the log files, it looks like you are running wsus 3 sp2 (3.2.7600.226) and wu client 7.5.7601.17514.
It's a challenging issue as we are not seeing errors from WSUS side however you mention that updates are not deployed. Please document the timestamps with updated log files and we'll see if we can expose this issue.
Thanks
Jose.

Hi Jose,
thanks for your reply. Yes, you are right, I already was able to deploy some adobe updates, unfortunately, it doesn't work now, though.
More interesting for me are the Dell updates. Suprisingly, when I checked the SCE Console and ran the report for Clients who need updates, there was a bunch of PC's listed with a need of a Dell update, but again, it doesn't appear anywhere to install on the client.
I will look for the updated files and timestamps.

I have this exact same issue with the Adobe Flash Player 32/64-bit Active X Plugin 11.1.102.62. Status for deployment stays in "In progress" and in the client windowsupdate.log nothing shows. I tried setting a deadline to no avail. The update before this one 11.1.102.55 deployed just fine and Adobe Reader X and Adobe Acrobat X updates from the library deploy fine.
How do I go about troubleshooting this?

No suggestions? The 11.1.102.63 update came today, same problem. What I managed to google is that this is a bug that's been around for quite a while and noone knows how to fix it. Is my only options ditching SCE for something more stable?
No way for a mere mortal to troubleshoot the issue?

Hey Rob,
unfortunately, I haven't been able to sort this out. I don't think, that I have misconfigured something, as Adobe Reader Updates are working flawlessly. But flashplayer is not working as well as Dell updates (even though you can see, that PC's need those updates).
The only way how you could deploy the updates is to download the flash player .msi file and configure a software package via the software tab.
cheers

Thank you for your comment. I gave up and pushed up the latest flash as a software deployment as per your recommendation.
Have you tried updating with the third party library updates after the software deployment, it doesn't fix the issue I guess?
-

You are welcome.
Yes, I tried this already, but unfortunately it doesn't fix it (for Dell & Adobe flash updates).
But again, I cannot imagine it is a configuration issue, as the update procedure works fine for Adobe reader... It's also weird, that there are no solutions on the web at all.

lundi 2 avril 2012 20:39Been digging a little more.
The updates UpdateState is InstallationImpossible which means http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/microsoft.updateservices.administration.updatestate(v=vs.85).aspx
"The update cannot be installed because of one of the following reasons: The update does not support installation; The WSUS server does not support a language for which this update has a localized license agreement; One or more updates that bundled this update are in the InstallationImpossible state. You cannot approve the update for installation, but you may approve the update for removal. If the update is part of a bundle, you cannot install the parent update if one of its children is in the InstallationImpossible state."
The updates UpdateApprovalState is pending http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/microsoft.updateservices.administration.updateapprovalstate(v=vs.85).aspx which means:
"Pending The WSUS server is downloading the update. When the download is complete, the approval state will switch to Active."
Somehow WSUS thinks it's downloading the update eventhough it's locally published and IUpdateServer.GetContentDownloadProgress reports all bytes to download are downloaded. I'll see if I can change the UpdateApprovalState to Active somehow. I feel pretty confident this is the problem, I feel less confident there's a way to fix it. :) If someone knowledgeable in the WSUS API want's to chime in I'd appreciate it.
