Did you run the backup manually or system performs it in scheduled? Were you performing a System Image or general backup?
At this point, please try the following suggestions to narrow down the root causes of the issue.
a. Test the issue in Clean Boot to check if it is caused by 3rd party programs or services.
b. Run Check Disk Utility to make sure that there are no errors on your hard drives.
1. Click the Start Button, type "cmd" (without quotation marks) in the Search bar.
2. Right click on the search result listed upper and click Run as Administrator.
3. In the open command window, input the following command and press Enter Key after it.
Chkdsk /f /r
4. Please type Y and press Enter.
5. Please restart the computer and let the tool check all drives on the computer.
C. Ensure that the backup is not running at the same time as another backup as the custom provider may only allow one snap-shot at a time.

It seems that the issue is possibly to occur. Please understand that you are trying to backup such a big size resource to your USB device. At this time, I suggest cancelling the backup process and trying to backup a smaller file to check the issue.
NOTE: Please temporarily disable the Antivirus programs installed on your computer during the troubleshooting.
In addition, I would like to confirm if you backup the system image at this time (Is System Image included in these 400GB data?).

- Hi gorio1961,
Can you let us know how much data you are trying to backup? Also, what is the backup target? Is it an internal harddisk / external harddisk/ network share?
Thanks,
Sneha
[MSFT] - This is my INITIAL backup using Microsoft Windows 7 Backup. My source HD hase at least 400 GB of data on it and the traget is a 1.5 TB external USB2.
That backup is now at 47% over 2 days. It seems that the issue is possibly to occur. Please understand that you are trying to backup such a big size resource to your USB device. At this time, I suggest cancelling the backup process and trying to backup a smaller file to check the issue.
