To turn off auto-arrange on the desktop, do the following:
- Right-click the desktop
- Expand the View menu
- Uncheck the Auto arrange icons option

It's for the folders I need it turned off , I'm a photographer and I need to be able to move files around to arrange pages in books & albums. It's horrible, I can't move anything in the folders...I wish I'd never purchased this OS.

Thanks everyone, I've taken the new computer back & went back to my old XP . I like Windows 7 but its useless to me if I can't do my work on it. I don't understand why Microsoft took away that choice for everyone.....
Aurthur , do you know if they are planning to come out with a fix for this? Thanks for taking the time to answer me.

I found myself here after helping a friend with their first PC (they are keen photographers!) and was stumped as to how to alter the folder views in W7 in the same way I can in Vista.
Not being able to disable auto arrange is a monumental failing MS... evey single item I have in every folder I arrange manually to suit me. When you consider all that is customizable... I'm speachless !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dimanche 21 novembre 2010 20:34Shoving all the desktop icons to the left every time i restart? Who thought that was a good idea? I've looked for a fix for this all day and apparently NOBODY thinks it's a good idea.
