USB Functionality in Virtual Mode
-
mardi 29 décembre 2009 05:25Cannot use USB devices in Windows XP Mode. Running Windows 7 Professional. When I click on the USB menu item, get:
"The virtualization driver needed for USB functionality is not working."
There is no USB listed in the Device Manager Tree.
There are 3 devices listed with question marks. All three say "Virtualization PC Integration Device."

mardi 29 décembre 2009 05:34I have seen this happen.
Yesterday I cleared this condition by restarting the XP Mode virtual machine. What is the status of the USB device on the physical machine? If it isn't properly recognized by the host machine, don't expect it to work in the vm. Also, is it in use by the host machine? -
mardi 29 décembre 2009 16:17I don't find any solution for this at all, and am trying to parse your statement. I also see the 3 devices. Restarting has no effect. My USB hardware and drivers are 100% ok, I have no trouble capturing and using the USB devices using vmware workstation 6.5. Which obviously begs the question as to why I am trying to get microsoft's virtual xp usb working, but I just want to see it work. I'm using win7-64 ultimate. Here is my bug report on it:

mardi 29 décembre 2009 17:35John,
The printer works fine in Windows 7 Pro, installed as 64 bit, but no USB functionality in vm. I have tried restarting the vm as well as the pc, still have the same problem. No USB device is being used on the host when I am trying to set up the printer in vm, except for a USB hub being plugged in. -

This is because the usb virtualization driver on the host may not be working.
Can you open devmgmt.msc on the host, and check if the 'usb virtualization connector driver' is installed and enabled under "USB Virtualization" node?
If its not installed, can you try installing it by updating the connector driver by pointing the wizard to %windir%\system32\drivers.
Then check if the same error occurs again.
Thanks, Rashmi U.R -
mardi 29 décembre 2009 18:27There is no "USB Virtualization" node on the host. How is this device installed? Where is the technical documentation for it? Where do you get the driver?

After thinking about what happened when I saw this problem, it could be that restarting the vm had nothing to do with resolving the problem. When I saw this problem, software installed on the host required a restart of the host. What probably happened is that USB Virtualization wasn't working and the reboot of the host cleared this condition and was the actual fix.
Restating Rashmi's advice, open Device Manager and see if USB Virtualization appears and is working properly.
Did the problem occur after installing or updating drivers on the host?- Marqué comme réponse Linda YanModerator mercredi 6 janvier 2010 02:24

mardi 29 décembre 2009 20:03John,
I have to agree with Paul, there is no USB nor USB Virtualization node in the host's Device Manager. So if there is no USB Virtualization showing up at all, how do you go about installing the drivers for it? The error message states that the USB Virtualization driver is not working...

mardi 29 décembre 2009 20:15Do you have a C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\vpcusb.sys file? Make sure Windows Explorer is set to allow you to see everything.

It's there.
Just a thought, I have Zonealarm Pro 9.1.008 installed, and it was running when I installed xp mode, and I'm wondering if Lekcuts also uses this?
I also did not do a separate install of virtual pc, I just installed xp mode. Today when I tried to install virtual pc, it said that the update was already installed. So no luck there.

A quick thing you can try, is reinstall windows virtual pc. It is this install that puts in the usb virtualization drivers. XP mode installer just installs a VHD. If reinstall doesn't solve the problem, a hypothesis is if zonealarm is interfering. Can you try installing when zone alarm is off?

mardi 29 décembre 2009 21:10I haven't had a chance to look for the C:\Windows\system32\drivers\vpcusp.sys, it is my home computer. I can tell you it isn't Zonealarm, I am using Microsoft Security Essentials. Will try to reinstall virtual pc tonight to see if that will fix the problem. I might have made the same mistake as Paul, not installing the Virtual pc first... Went right to installing XP Mode.

You can install XP Mode and Virtual PC in either order. The reason Microsoft says to install XP Mode first is because it doesn't require a reboot and Virtual PC does. By installing Virtual PC after XP Mode, the required reboot is saved for the last step.
I tell people to install Virtual PC before installing XP Mode. The reason I give that advice is because some people install XP Mode only. XP Mode by itself (without Virtual PC) can't do anything. Virtual PC doesn't need XP Mode to work. If you're only going to install one product, Virtual PC is the one to install. -
mardi 29 décembre 2009 21:24Reinstalling virtual pc worked. USB menu is now working and I assume the devices will work. This install procedure for this product needs to be made more foolproof in my opinion. It is a bit confusing to have 2 installs to achieve one result.

mardi 29 décembre 2009 21:33Thanks Paul,
I will try reinstalling tonight. -

All versions of Windows 7 can install Windows Virtual PC, while XP Mode is restricted to Pro, Enterprise and Ultimate.
You either have 2 installs (XP Mode VM and WinVPC) or 2 downloads (WinVPC alone, and WinVPC + XPMode). -
mercredi 6 janvier 2010 16:47So to reinstall the XP Mode VM and WinVPC I will have to uninstall them first? If I uninstall them what happens to everything I have already copied into and installed into the XP Mode? I copied all my files and misc from my old XP pc to the XP Mode VM. Little wary of uninstalling, already lost some files in the transfer.
-
mercredi 6 janvier 2010 21:24I also had that concern and backed up my xp mode files first. For some reason, the uninstall/reinstall did not affect the xp machine at all, everything was preserved and I did not need the backup.

2. Select the top most node on the list
3. Goto Action -> Add Legacy hardware
4. Click Next on Hardware Wizard screen
5. Select "Install the hardware that i manually select from the list (Advanced)" and click Next.

Hetal,
This is by far the easiest way to re-install these Virtualization drivers and I run Win7 Pro.
Others wanted to reinstall Virtual PC but you can't because you already have it and I didn't want to redo alot of work by uninstalling it and reinstalling it, this way you don't worry about it you just run the Virualization Driver install and it works immediately. I had a Virtual PC running Vista and before I installed the virtualization drivers nothing was there under the USB tab and after I installed the virtualization drivers the headset, wireless network card and lifecam were showing up under the USB tab.
Thanks very much for the best solution which tend to be the simplest and easiest solution.

Hello Hetal and others:
I am having the following issue related to USB connections in the XP VM:
Inside of Windows XP mode - Windows Virtual PC, When I click on the USB button (to attach/detach USB devices), a popup window appears, titled: "Windows XP mode - Windows Virtual PC" with a big red X to the left of the message: "Virtual PC cannot support more then 16 USB devices. Disconnect one or more USB devices and try again." (See below).
I poked around but haven't found a cause, solution or any mention of this exact error message on the Internet yet.
I do not have 16 USB devices appearing anyplace (device manager, etc). I can't attach any because I can't get past that message, Clicking OK dismisses the pop-up until clicking on the attach/detatch USB dropdown button again.I tried uninstalling the USB Virtualization Connector Driver and then reinstalling it again (as per your instructions above) hoping it might reset any enumeration counters for the number of USB devices connected to the XP Virtual Machine, but reinstalling the USB Virtualization Connector Driver on my Win7 host does not seem to fix this issue. I continue to get the error message window (see below).
Are you aware of any fixes I can try to correct this issue I am having with my XP Virtual machine? I'm trying to verify a legacy printer is working proplery and I need to install the drivers/software on the XP VM as there are no current drivers for Win7 for this printer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Max

Well, I found what I think is causing the problem, so I've isolated it to having to do with a wireless card, but I still can't figure out a solution to how to not get the above error when using the wireless card. If I turn off my wireless on my notebook, I do not get the error message. However as soon as I turn my wireless card back on, Win XP virtual machine indicates the error window that there are more than 16 USB devices connected when in fact there are not.
So far, I haven't seen any more comments or suggestions for fixes that work for me.
Hopefully there will be something posted soon.
