PC Card / PCMCIA / Cardbus NIC supported in Server core?
- Hi guys,
For testing purpose, I installer server core on a laptop and I would like to configure a second NIC but apparently server core doesn't support PC Card / PCMCIA / Cardbus NIC.
Can anyone confirm that it was disable like Wireless connection? I hope it is not the case because for testing purpose I would like to play with Hyper-V on server core but with 2 different NIC.
Thank you in advance,
Didier

Hi,
You mentioned that “I used to use the full installation of Server 2008”. I’d like to confirm whether you can use this PC Card Gigabyte Ethernet NIC in full installation of Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V.
I confirmed with our colleague in Server Core team that Server Core doesn’t support PC Card / PCMCIA / Cardbus. However, seems a USB Ethernet card can works in Server Core.

- Hi Vincent Hu,
I just received my USB to gigabit adaptator today and it is working fine with Server core. You just need to install the driver with pnputil.
I bought the only adaptator I found with 64bits supports: Linksys USB300M (http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/USB300M)- Marqué comme réponseVincent HuMSFT, Modérateurvendredi 6 novembre 2009 08:43

Hi,
I’d like to confirm what’s your PC Card / PCMCIA / Cardbus NIC used for. Is it a wireless card?
Server Core is designed for server environment, it make sense that if it doesn’t support PC Card / PCMCIA / Cardbus NIC. As you are on a laptop, why not use a full installation of Windows Server 2008 to perform the test? I recommend that you have a full installation and then test whether it works.

Hi Vincent Hu,
First, thank you for your reply. The PC Card / PCMCIA / Cardbus is a Gigabit ethernet card. I used to use the full installation of Server 2008 but I would like to install this one in order to host an Hyper-V with 2 different hardware NIC. It is a way to force me/motivate me to use and learn server core.
I already made a lot of research and talk with different people about this but no one was able to help me. The good thing is they also tried to do and also made some research for this because not everybody has a server at home to test and learn a new product. Even those who have MSDN licence :-).
I hope a solution exists for this (Otherwise I can buy a USB ethernet card if someone can confirm that it will work)
Kind Regards,

- Hi,
It's because i created a DMZ with 2 firewalls and my Hyper-V hosts child partition for the DMZ zone but also for the LAN. It's why i wanted to try the same on Server Core. i will try to find a Ethernet USB adapator compatible with Server 2008 and i will let you know.
Does this configuration make sense for you?
