Why no autoretry on failed recoverpoint creation?

    שאלה

  • Isn't it true that DPM should automatically retry failed jobs including consistancy checks and rec. point creations every third hour?

We have some sort of temporary communication glitch on the agent communication (which doesn't seem that unusual) which is under investagation with MS, and when the recovery point creations overlaps these blackouts, you're left with no recovery points which isn't wierd at all. What i don't like is that DPM doesnt seem to retry to create the RP's, isn't it supposed to do this like every third hour, or was it only for failing consistency checks? There's no problem to manually create recoverypoint, but this will be a nightmare when our company expands from 20 to 200 servers in dpm.

Another thing, when this happens, i can't create recovery point directly from the Monitoring>Alerts tab, that will only result in a dialogue box prompting for verification but nothing starts or being scheduled. I have to visit the protection tab and drill down to the failing PS and its workload and from there rightclick and chose create recoverypoint.

Is this a bug or something to lookup?

  • Hi

Auto-retry and Auto-CC are two seperate features. By default, each will only retry one time.  This is configurable in the registry. Please review the following BLOG that details the features and how to tweak them to fit your needs.

  • Hi,

The auto rerun attempt is based on the protection group settings, so if you have a recovery point scheduled for every 2 hours in PG1, but every 12 in PG2, the autorerun will work for PG2 if a failure occured. You can adjust that 4hr window using a MinFrequencyOfJob entry. The value is 240 (4hrs) by default.

  • three questions regarding the article regarding Auto-rerun

*Auto-rerun will not be attempted if another job is scheduled to run within 4 hours or for any Adhoc jobs.

    1. Will there be no rerun attempt if there's _any_ scheduled job in any of the PG's in 4 hrs?

Since we have SQL synchronization every 15 minute, i guess this function will be hard to implement, if syncs counts as a 'job' which i assume..

    2. What unit does the DWORD AutoRerunDelay expect; seconds, minutes or hours?

    3. Does changing any of these registry values requiring reboot, or would it suffice to restart the dpm-service or something?
