السؤال Multiple Office KMS Keys?

    Hi,

I’ve set up my KMS server and everything seems to be working well.  I even have it activating my Office 2010 users.  We are rolling out Office 2010 in two phases.  I purchased a user license for the first group of users who did the initial testing of Office and now we have purchased the remainder of the licenses for the rest of our company.

Question, do I have to install the second KMS key on the KMS server?  Can the server handle having two keys for the same product installed?

    Thanks in advance,

    Linn

The KMS server will only accept one key per product activation id.  So you don't have to worry about feeding it the second key since there is no limit of how many hosts a KMS server can activate.

Ok, that is the answer I was expecting.  With KMS, how can you report on or manage the number of systems that get activated?  Is there a tool available that shows how many licenses you have and how many machines have activated against them?

    Thanks,

    Linn

In my honest opinion, KMS wasn't designed with this thought in mind because the count stops incrementing at twice the minimum activation value.  Boy this reads in a confusing way, so lets see if this makes more sense...

    If activating Windows 2008/2008R2 - KMS count would max out 10 (5 * 2)
If activating Windows Vista/7 - KMS count would max out at 50 (25 * 2)
If activation Office 2010 - KMS count would max out at 10 (5 * 2)

I'm sure someone might suggest that you could data mine the event log entries, but it isn't something I would do and wouldn't suggest to someone else.

How many machines do you have in your environment?  You may want to try the VAMT 2.0 tool:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=ec7156d2-2864-49ee-bfcb-777b898ad582&displaylang=en

You can see whether your machines have been activated by KMS.  If you have more than 1000, then it may be harder to track with VAMT.

The "Current count" that you see when you run slmgr.vbs /dlv is twice the activation threshold, as Steven Meade pointed out.  This is the number of machines in the list (queue structure) of computers that have hit the KMS host in the past 30 days.  It's updated as new computers activate with the host.  The computer in the queue drop off after 30 days if they've been in the queue that long.  If this falls below your activation threshold, then the KMS host cannot activate machines until the activation threshold is established again.

Assuming your question is directed toward me because of my comments, we are tad over 5300 Windows hosts spread across 33 sites in the US.

We only have about 60 computers but since the count stops at twice the threshold I guess it is a mute point.  Would be nice if they had a convenient method of auditing our license usage.

    Thanks,

If you only have 60 computers then VAMT would be a great tool to use.  Then you can monitor every computer in your environment.

    hi there!

so, what if you want to distribute two different versions of an office product side by side.
for example: office visio premium and office vivio standard

do i have to use a mak key or can i do this with kms?

    hi worldwidewilli,

kms will do both. if your kms has the office2010 kmshost pkey installed and its activated and is issuing activations, it will activate all office 2010 kmsclient products (office, visio, project, std, pro, prem, etc)

this is why you must carefully manage your VL pkeys to remain correctly licensed!
