no video

when playing wmv files with windows media player i get sound but NO video
using windows xp pro (32bit) service pac 3. windows media player 11.the download from microsoft says that it is for xp pro 64 and apparently does not come with the correct video codecs
i have tried rolling back to version 9 . i have reinstalled player 11 many times. installed multible codecs tried with no success
don't know why my computer will not play video (only sound) with windows media player.
why does the player install without the correct video codec ?
i've even trieds other players. my sony video editing software that i installed is the only program that displays video.
