GPP Settings Absent in RSOP
-
Sunday, October 04, 2009 3:10 AMLately I notice that when I run RSOP on Vista, 2008 or Windows 7, the applied preference settings do not show. I have tried this on several machines in 3 different organizations and they are all the same. If I look at the Error Information tab it does show the component name with a Success Status (for example "Group Policy Shortcuts" on a machine which is getting shortcuts through a GPO).
It seems to me that I used to be able to see the GPP settings in RSOP, and I would say that it's important to be able to. Am I recalling this correctly, or do they simply not show in RSOP?
Thanks.

GPP settings do not show up in a locally executed RSOP (mmc snap in).
The information I got from Microsoft is that there are no plans to integrate GPP into this.
They say, RSOP.msc will in general not be extended or updated as it is no tool of the future...
Instead, RSOP shall be performed via GPMC which includes GPP settings.

For better administration and managing use GPMC- Group policy managment console, where you will get the group policy applied to the particular level. And this console is integrated with Windows server 2008 .
however, you must install it before you can use it.
Download details : http://www.microsoft.com/DownLoads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0a6d4c24-8cbd-4b35-9272-dd3cbfc81887&displaylang=en
And the above mentioned console is ease to use.

Hi,
You don’t need worry about Firewall blocking GPMC problem, you just need to run the command on client below to enable it:netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="windows management instrumentation (wmi)" new enable=yes
Or configure it via Group Policy.
If necessary, you can enable Windows Firewall Remote Management so that Administrator could adjust Firewall settings as needed.
Thanks.

There is one problem with this. I instruct people who do desktop support to use RSOP at the desktops of their users when they run into GPO issues. Of course, those machines will not have RSAT installed. Also, if the solution is to go back to their own desks and run RSOP remotely from within the GPMC, it's very likely that the Windows Firewall will block it. -
