Jawab Expired messages - remove strikethrough

  • 17 Februari 2009 20:31

When setting a retention policy on an Outlook folder, one of the actions available is to "mark as past retention limit."  This flags affected items by putting a line (strikethough) across the message entry and changing the font type to a "grey'd out" looking color.  If you open the message it says "This message expired on...." at the top of the message.

My question is, can this be un-done?  I can't see how and i've been asked to remove the expired mark for some Outlook folder items.

    All advice/help is appreciated.

    Hi,

Yes. It's a client side configuration.

In Outlook, please choose the folder you want change. Click Tools—organize, using colors tab, click “automatic formatting…” Then change the expired email font there.

    Thanks,

    Elvis

that doesn't remove the strikethrough or the "this message expired on.." message.  i probably wasn't clear enough.  i want to turn expired messages back to not-expired.  presumably this would change the strikethrough and grey'd out appearance of the messages.

There is no updated answer for remove strike-through from expired message/task on Outlook 2010, so waste me a lots of time to explore the answer and finally found the resolution:

Go to VIEW settings under VIEW Pull-down Sub-menu to change the font of EXPIRED EMAIL and/or COMPLETED AND READ/UNREAD TASKS inside CONDITIONAL FORMATTING wherever (email/task folder) you are.

The way to achieve what blinkyjesus really wanted to do in the first place (un-expire a message, not just change the font/display) is as follows.  Note, I believe this can be done only one message at a time, and couldn't find a way to do it for an entire folder.

Using the ribbon (not the Quick Access Toolbar):  Open the expired message, in the Message tab select the lower right corner pop-out in the Tags section (called Message Options).  This will open a dialog box.  Uncheck the "Expires after:" box then select 'Close'.  When you then close the message, it will prompt you to save changes and - voilà - the message is truly no longer expired (and hence, displays normally without the gray strikethrough font).

If you use the Quick Access Toolbar in the main Mail (Inbox / Folder) window, you can add an icon to directly open the Message Options dialog box and this will save some steps (useful if you have to unexpire multiple emails).  Note that with this approach, you do not have to open the expired message to un-expire it.  Click the Customize Quick Access Toolbar icon at the far right of the Quick Access Toolbar (default location is just above the ribbon).  In the ensuing dropdown box click More Commands...  (Note this is also accessible via the File / Options / Quick Access Toolbar menu selections.)  In the 'Choose commands from:' dropdown box select 'Commands Not in the Ribbon'.  Scoll down and select 'Message Options...' then click 'Add > >' to move it into the right-hand pane.  If you want to change the button's position in the toolbar, select it in the right-hand pane and click the Up or Down arrow at the far right.  Finally, click OK and you will see the Message Options icon in the Quick Access Toolbar.  Now select (don't open) one expired message at a time, click the 'Message Options' icon, uncheck the "Expires after:" box, select 'Close', select 'Yes' to save your changes, and - voilà - the message is truly no longer expired (and hence, displays normally without the gray strikethrough font).

Left click on the message to highlight it.  Then right click to open the drop-down menu.  Scroll to bottom and click Message Options.  Uncheck the Expires after: box.  Click Close in bottom right corner.  Your problem should be solved.

Yes, thank you AtlantaBob!  This worked for Outlook 2010.  Now I just need to resolve for multiple emails or an entire folder - anyone, anyone?  This would be great, thanks.
