I have an issue regarding opening .doc files in Outlook 2010. I use gmail as my mail server on my website. When I receive a mail and view it in the gmail webmail I can preview the .doc attachment and download it as expected. I have an issue when I look at the same mail through outlook 2010. The preview is blank and when I download it and open it locally its just a blank word document.
This seems to be only happening for .doc attachments (.docx are fine).
Has anyone come across this issue before?

How about the result if we open this .doc attachment with Outlook 2010 client in another computer?
If the behavior is right, there might be something wrong on your client. Try to launch Outlook with safe mode or repair Office component from Control pane to see the result.
And please also try create a new Outlook profile and disable AVG, especially mail scanner for testing.
Let me know the result.

Thanks for the reply. It's all the computers on an internal network. All the outlook clients on each computer were deployed from the main admin computer. Each Outlook works the same with the error. One of the computers on the network still has Office 2007 so I tested Outlook 2007 on this computer and the files open perfectly without any fault.
I have security essentials running on the computers, no other anti virus tools. I tried going into the trust center on both word 2010 and outlook 2010 and tried different configurations but I still get the blank preview /download file.
Also the blank download doc comes out with alot more pages then the original file. Sometimes up to 30 blank pages.
Thanks.

It sounds like that would something wrong when deploy Outlook 2010.
At this point, please try to clean install Office 2010 in one of client both with domain or none-domain environment. At meantime, I will do further research if there is any registry key may affect it.
Anyway, Please also follow the steps below and check if it helps.
1. Click Start, In search type ‘regedit’ (Without Quotes)
2. Navigate to location HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Security
3. On the right copy the temporary files location.
4. Empty the temporary files folder.Tony Chen

Hi, there is no location HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Security
There is a location HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Security but there is more sub folders here such as trusted locations etc
